Winter Improvement Thread (aka Winter Squad Weakening Thread and TWF Suicide Watch)

Not entirely sure about Pearce, Reading fans weren't bothered in the slightest when he left in the summer. I'm surprised Gladwin hasn't had a bigger impact at QPR this season though, he looked excellent in the play-offs last year.

He's much better than anything we have.

Not sure what your overuse of a word you can't spell has to do with Kevin Keegan, but yeah, if you're going to use it so much then at least spell it right.

You don't give anything, as you've just proved again. Name just one player who we could have gone for, their transfer fee, wages, agents fees etc. Or shall I just check left sided midfielders on a random stats website? If you're going to throw brazen statements out there with not one shred of evidence (for want of a better word) to back them up then don't put down other posters for making statements of their own, which in this case seemed a lot more based in reality than yours.

No I don't have faith in our recruitment, but at the same time I don't go round rubbishing other peoples' posts pretending that I know all about the goings on and finances of the club.

Saucer of milk. Calm down you'll make yourself I'll. I have not a clue who you are and you don't have a clue who I am, what I do etc. Please show me where I have pretended to know anything. You can't. Off you trot now then. Perhaps you have enough nous to know when to leave it

I'd take Pearce over Williamson as we might get five years out of one and we'd be lucky to get two out of the other. Not much to split them as players as far as I can tell.

Agree with NWW, he is better than anyone we have available so i would have taken a look. Gladwin just hasn't got it imo, looks good when things are going well but doesn't want to know when it isn't and at this much better level he just doesn't want to know.

I don't care who you are or what you do. As for showing you what you pretend to know it's plastered all over the fucking forum, and your last two sentences just show you up for the eejit you are.

At least you're spelling nous right now though.

An idiot who doesn't resort to petty name calling. Grow up.

Oh and everything about the club, our style, our recruitment blah blah is oh so great at the moment. Oh I have found the block button. Bye bye. But as you're a mod I can't. Shame. Its a forum. We post here to vent, celebrate, dispair, etc. I don't come here to be the subject of un-evidenced vitriolic rants. You don't agree fine. Your sarcasm reduces you to the level you accused me of being. Glasshouse and stones. You are a mod so should know better.

I'm firmly of the opinion that Moxey was being honest when he said that we would replace Sako by spending. I think he thought that Ken would splash £2m on Zyro in the summer but Jackett turned it down to save using up a lot of his budget.

We do know that Williamson had a positive effect on our defence though.
As for our failure to bring in players, I know Thelwell gets lots of abuse but his job is to identify players. His dossiers seem to be bulging with potential targets. Look at the amount of left backs we're linked with for instance. At the start of each window we hear names that seem promising (accepting not all are true) then as the weeks go by we are linked to less and less inspiring players until we reach Sagbo (accurately changed to say no on my spell checker) or Holt.
My suspicion is Jez Moxey and his bargaining style is the problem or were relatively skint and can only sign players no one else wants.

Good job we used that money on Coady....oh.

That's the kind of signing that damns Ken, spending loads of his budget on a player who in no way improves on what we already had. He looked like a bog standard, sub £500k defensive midfielder at Huddersfield, surprise surprise that is exactly what he is.

Jackett in not being able to buy players at this level shocker. I'd really like Thelwell and Moxey to buy the players, tell Jackett they are buying the squad and if he doesn't like it he can go.

That way we would know who does what and who is to blame for recruitment/ tactics.

That's the problem. Replacing Sako at this level was never going to be easy and as it is before Graham got injured we actually replaced him to a degree without spending anything. However we didn't improve our team in the other positions that needed to be improved upon and spent the money on Coady as you say and on 2 players that Jackett obviously doesn't think are good enough.

Not sure the budget is that low. Of course we're a way off Boro/Derby and teams with full parachute payments but Rowett said after we beat them that they'd have loved to bring in Williamson but couldn't get near that kind of money. God knows what percentage of the bill we were picking up but Holt is on ludicrous wages at Wigan.

We do seem to be a paradox this year. Holt gets paid, le Fondre comes, neither plays much and yet the one defensive player who appeared to make a difference has not been signed. Odd

Lots of people think they know things on football forums. They know more than the managers, they know which players Thelwell signed and which one Jackett signed (Thelwell signed the good ones). They know which positions the players should or shoudn't play. Knowing much more than our manager, or even all our managers over the last 8 years. That is what football forums are about.

I wouldn't have thought that spelling has anything do do with intelligence, or superior knowledge. It could mean you have had a better education, but the need to throw that down anothers posters throat isn't dignified in my opinion and has nothing to do with the debate.

To be fair it doesn't really matter that Williamson isn't signed yet. As he isn't fit so wouldn't have played a single minute even if he'd joined on New Year's Day.

If he's expecting anywhere near parity on his Newcastle deal then he isn't going to get it, not from us, not from anyone. I suspect he wants to come to an arrangement with them to pay him off with a portion of what he's owed until the end of June before he goes anywhere.

I'm honestly not that fussed about him. If he signs then fine, we know he fits in ok and does a lot of what we need. But it's a signing with absolutely nothing long term about it and he's hardly so good that we couldn't find someone younger, possibly cheaper as well (I know this is anathema to many, but I don't see the need to be wasteful whether we're running on a shoestring or have £10m burning in our pocket) to do the exact same or better job. I will however be annoyed if we can't come to a deal and then don't sign anyone at all.

I will reserve the right to moan my arse off, but Hause with another centre half that will be in a partnership with him next season I could live with, Williamson has two years in him at this level and that's ok. If we can get better then great. Better unfortunately is not Batth or EEL
