Welcome Jose Sa

Some top saves there. Shame he's still so inconsistent and poor with the ball really.as he's got all the other tools to be a top keeper.

We need to get this position right in the summer. I've been very critical of Sá in his time here but we've been lucky with him and Rui in our time in the Premier League really. Leicester & Leeds found out the season before last how an otherwise decent team can drop like a stone with a substandard keeper and Blades & Burnley never stood a chance this season with their options. Get it wrong and that could be the difference between mid table and a relegation battle.

He's the weirdest keeper we've ever had in my time to assess. You go into every single game not knowing what you'll get. I've seen him make some of the very best saves I've seen from a Wolves keeper and also let in a very high proportion of awful goals.

Whether it was O'Neil or Cutler, someone got in his ear after Luton away and told him to stop fucking around so much with the ball, and he's largely done so.

I might be a bit old skool in that I want my keeper to stop the ball going in the net. Nothing more than that, really.

Sa is usually responsible for five/six fuck ups a season that other keepers wouldn’t usually make. He’s uncertain (at best) with the ball at his feet and I always feel uncomfortable when it’s played back to him under pressure.

Agreed in that he’s made great saves - not so sure that most of them wouldn’t have been saved by any other top half Premier League keeper though.

The fuck ups he makes are generally ones other's would though. 90% of them come from being shit on the ball or trying to be fancy when under pressure. Keepers now being seen as an active part of the possession process is where we are. Ton of goals or chances now created because of a poor touch or pass from a keeper.

He will let in some soft goals, but again all keepers do and he fits around a mid table keeper for his numbers on that front.

We can do better than Sa but as Lycan has said, we can do worse and it will cost us.

Imagine a season with Bentley as the number 1.

Not sure that's true on 2 levels, firstly i'm sure he's made 6 fuck ups that have directly lead to goals this season (DW will be over in a bit i'm sure, but i'm talking DIRECTLY)? And also pretty much all the keepers make mistakes, Allison, Ederson, Pickford, Vicario they all do we're just not as critical of them for obvious reasons - we don't care!

He's been way ahead of 2022/23 in that respect, he let in so many awful goals that season. Way more than 6!

I'd have principally down to him:

Liverpool's second at Molineux (I know there's bits where we could have defended it better, but it's all from his dreadful kick)
Newcastle's opener at Molineux (very poor attempt at claiming a cross)
West Ham's winner at Molineux (a corner cannot be going straight in)
Forest's opener at The City Ground (that header should never be going in)
Arsenal's second at Molineux (can't get beaten like that, mind you we were losing that game anyway)

Five then.

Others that are up for debate but those are the ones that stand out to me on a quick look through.

Liverpool's second at Molineux (I know there's bits where we could have defended it better, but it's all from his dreadful kick) - Disagree, it's a crap kick, ( he stupidly rushed) but it still lands about 50 yards from goal, that is not a DIRECT error from Sa. All we needed to do was just fucking mark Robertson.

West Ham's winner at Molineux (a corner cannot be going straight in) - Agree
Forest's opener at The City Ground (that header should never be going in) - Agree. probably his worst mistake this season?

He is certainly in credit massively, in terms of very good over very bad.

I know it's a penalty, but he absolutely should save Haalands second

For me his best ever performance for Wolves (and by a distance too) was Coventry. He was outstanding, if Bentley's in goal we lose 7-2 or something.

Means nowt as we lost anyway but I'm a lot happier with him in general than I was a year ago. He had a horrendous season then and didn't seem capable of learning, but he has.

The club might look at it as he's 32 in January, if a big bid comes in (Saudi?) then this is probably the last chance to make decent money on him, but it's a gamble because yeah, you get that position wrong and you really, really, really notice. I was spoiled growing up with the Stowell -> Oakes -> Murray -> Hennessey/Hahnemann lineage, they were all at very least solid keepers, Murray was of course superb. Suddenly we've got Ikeme in nets and fucking hell, we have a massive problem here. Let alone having Lonergan play games.

I’m obviously not suggesting we have Bentley anywhere near No.1 (or number 21, for that matter) - nor am I suggesting we do worse.

With the inevitable £20-25m we’d get for Sa (especially if he goes to Saudi) we’d get a miles better alternative and an extra few quid to paint the South Bank, too.

Win, win.

Dorus de Vries & Stefan Postma getting a very easy ride here. Horror show.

We got ~£75m for Diogo Jota and Morgan Gibbs-White. We spent £71m of that on Fabio Silva, Ki-Jana Hoever and Gonçalo Guedes. Aces.

If we had a Brighton-style recruitment team and analytical model then fine, do it. We don't though.

Both barely played in fairness, I'm only talking proper #1s (Postma got half a season or so but only because Murray was crocked)

De Vries was better than Ikeme anyway (very low bar)

Paul Jones polluted it for most of 2004 but I am choosing to ignore him today.

By signing who?

I think i hated Paul Jones more than you hate Doherty.

He was a cunt.

Shaving 50 in his hair to signify 50 caps for Wales, whilst losing 5-0 was wonderful though.

His performances at the start of 2004/05 were incredibly bad, such an awful piece of business. I know I'm shamelessly plugging my work a fair bit lately, but :D

(On which note, there's a series starting tomorrow or Tuesday that I hope people enjoy)
