Some of the swings in the recent special elections were bonkers. There was a seat in Florida up for grabs that, though the Republicans won, there was something like a 17% swing to the left (Trump won the county by 19%; the special election was won by 2%). That’s basically unheard of, and it’s a good sign, though how much irreversible damage will have already been done by the time Congressional seats are up for vote is a different question.

If the Dems manage to get back some power in the Senate, they’ll use it. I hope.

I think this is how Trump has always done business, there are loads of stories of him not paying for venues during his first presidential campaign, and other stories of him simply not paying for stuff.

The order with the April 20 deadline is explicitly focused on "operational control of the southern border," not on broader civil or domestic unrest.

Technically it’s not a Presidential power, which is why Trump has had to crow about fentanyl coming in (dishonestly, to be clear); technically can only be invoked by the President when there is a national emergency, which Congress is saying that there is simply not, or at least not enough that it’s worth taxing penguins over.

It's exactly what is outlined in Project 2025. It may be that they draw back from actually doing it, but there are plenty of people out there who think that he will do it. And you can bet if the 'Hands Off' protests continue he will. He'll use it as a reason to have the army on the streets squashing any sign of protest.

You seem to forget that he is a Nazi and he has already deported people illegally, pardoned his supporters who murdered a police officer, had representatives from the Department of Justice try and intimidate a witness and their family, and try and intimidate the entire world through bullshit economic policy. True. However, by initiating the Insurrection Act, it absolutely opens the door to martial law IF they say that protest against the government is a threat to national security. Which is more than possible.
