Looks like it’ll be business as usual:
President Gustavo Petro agrees to accept deported migrants after Trump had ordered 25% tariffs on all goods.

Rocket fuel for anyone seeking similar action here.
Very troubling times ahead.
Thank you for posting.
That report sums up the state of journalism at the BBC with basically zero deep or critical analysis.
I have family links to Colombia and have lived and worked there, so.... what is missing from this report?
* Colombia is the country in Latin America with the strongest political relationship with the USA in recent years. It is a close ally to the US unlike many other countries in the Americas so a bit of standing up for yourself and your principles is evident here as Trump begins his malign stupidity as president.
* The Colombian leadership wanted to make a stand on receiving non-Colombians ie many Venezuelans on those two military aeroplanes.
* Colombia is, unlike a certain country let alone Venezuela, not destined for dictatorship as President Petro is not standing for a second presidency. There's a lot of scaremongering going on in right wing circles about Colombia going the way of Venezuela.
* Colombia is a major supplier of cheap labour to the USA alongside world class music and coffee, emeralds, petroleum, coal, cut flowers, fruit and vegetables as well as a certain white powdery substance that many rich Americans seem to illegally acquire and indeed require if they are to function. Raising tariffs just means higher costs for such products for American consumers. NB. Very few Colombians 'enjoy' the powdery substance and the vast majority are sick to death of being constantly asked about it and that bloke from Medellin.
* Colombia has stepped forward quite rightly where Brazil, Mexico and Guatemala were quieter on being unhappy about receiving returning citizens in leg and arm shackles often after being denied due legal process by ICE in the USA. Those other three countries also initially refused to accept being told that US military planes were going to be on their way. In fact as the BBC reports, Colombia received 124 deportation flights in 2024 on non-military planes.
Thank you for your interest in a fascinating and much maligned country.
