The Velotard Thread.

Can't say I do. Sometimes a bit of a fiddle to get the wheel back in, but nothing too worrying. That said, I had a fucking nightmare last summer when putting some carbon compound on the seatpost and the locking element dropped into seat tube. Took about four hours to get the fucking thing back out. I had visions of a ruined multi-£k bike being ruined.

I think I might get mine looked at then. The frame really seems to grab hold of the wheel on the non-drive side. Really is too tight for comfort.

Nice. GP5000 was it?

Yup. Lovely tyre but an utter bastard to get on when cold. So much so that I feel that even his high sweariness, Paddy, would run out of invective.

I know that there are a number on here who do far more than I do on a cycle (not difficult really), but need to get a bit more exercise into my life.

Walk a lot (to the extent that the car failed to start last week from non use). After my last knee op the Consultant advised on exercise , but not running as have little cartilege left in both, but that cycling was a good option.

Not sure that I want to be doing long cycle rides on a standard bike (& can't see the point of electrically assisted ones, plus they are bloody expensive), but did think of getting a static one to set up in the garage. Double benefit of being dry & when I want to stop I am only 5 yards from the back door rather than 5 miles.

There are a mass of options out there & no idea what is good & what is rubbish. Anyone have suggestions?

Prepared to pay a reasonable amount for something that will do a job.

Firstly, do you have a bike that you happy to use indoors on some kind of trainer?

Mrs Doog has had ops on both of her knees and found cycling to be really good for them. She used to cycle every day, but had a nasty fall that knocked her confidence. She now uses a crappy old static bike that had been sitting in the garage and reckons it's even better than proper cycling. Something like this, but 20 years older.

Simple answer - no
So, you're looking for more of a gym style exercise bike? I don't really know much but I'd imagine it would be a pretty expensive route to go down.
A cheap bike and an indoor trainer might be more cost effective, if not slightly more complicated to set up.

Oh, wow, looking at Doog's link, I had no idea they could be picked up for that cheap 👍

Problem with online buying is you can't really tell what they are like till they turn up (& you've already paid for it by then)

Looking online they seem to range from Doog's version (or even cheaper) up to £400 or £500 pounds - trouble is that I really don't know what I'm looking at & don't want to throw a load of cash at something that isn't very robust.

May just go for something cheap to start with to get going & if it breaks then I've not lost much

Have bitten the bullet & it should turn up within the next week

Not as cheap as Doog posted, but not that much more & gives me something to start on - doing a bit more online research some of these go up to £2500 which I am really not going anywhere near just now.

We will see what benefit it has.

Exercise bike turned yesterday, but in IKEA format with an assembly book that might as well be written in Arabic

A job for Monday - going to have to lay all the pieces out in the garage and try and work out what goes where - still, it will give me a workout even if the bike doesn't.

be interested to know how you get on PLF. considering acquiring one for home myself.

Had a bit of a moment yesterday while descending a hill at about ~40mph which I've done hundreds of times, namely a speed wobble. Felt like it was coming from the back end so assumed a flat but once I'd stopped no evidence of such, no visible damage or any hint as to a cause.

Anyone got any ideas? Mechanic has said to check for vibration, oscillation etc and maybe buy a new stem as the original one has always been problematic.

Machin: As you've got the same bike as me, have you had this experience?

I'm too scared to go that fast 😬
But no, no speed wobble from what I've experienced.

jesus, I'm not capable of going that fast wombat. think I *may* have got to around 25mph at best...

I'd guess,
Slight wheel buckle?
Tyre not seated properly?
QR release/thru axle not tight enough?
And silly as it sounds not enough weight on the front, perhaps you haven't gone full holding on tight for dear life you fearless bastard as the rest of us would

What would people suggest as a good/starter indoor trainer?

I've got a bike sat downstairs doing nothing and I'm too much of a fair weather person to be thinking about cycling outside at the moment but wouldn't mind trying to build some fitness up.
