The things that I really, really like thread...

As Ireland is about to introduce water charges and instantly becoming the most expensive providers of water in Europe, my neighbour has just bought a monster tank for collecting rainwater...
Interesting, but I think he's going to run guttering from both rooves into it.
He has a pump already and he's going to plumb it into his house and use it for just flushing his toilets.

I wonder if it's going to be worth the bother....
I think he'll have to plumb it into his 3 toilet cisterns individually...?
If it's a runner, it would make me very happy to do the same thing...

Anyone else got one?

Do it Roy, for washing up and the shitters it saves you fortunes, and frankly it aint that bad for showers either, now a proper sod off, glass of brandy and candles bath, with a fit woman, is another matter entirely

Mental note added: When in Greece, avoid the coconut suntan oil.

It'd be alright to use in your washing machine too i believe.

You're best off working out how much water you're likely to collect, average rainfall x roof area x some coefficient for the roof surface efficiency, and how much you're likely to save from your toilet flushing then get a few quotes and you can work out your payback period.

I did something similar on commercial properties for my dissertation, they didn't turn out to be financially viable for most but i had to be quite general with my methodolgy so the results were perhaps not as conclusive as they could've been.

But how on earth do you plumb in a pipe that then goes off to 2 showers, a washing machine and 2 toilets..?
Also you'd have to put a tap on the regular pipe as it might not rain for a while...

I just looked at the financial side, can't really remember the ins and outs of how you make it work in practice.

I think you have to sort of split your system into two, your toilets and whatever else you can run off the lower quality water is fed by the big tank outside and then everything else from the regular system, with a means of having the regular system top up the rainwater side when necessary.

It can't see it working out to be as good as it appears on paper to be honest.

Cheers Mark.
If you're doing the sums, I think a toilet does 7 or 10 litres a flush and this tank he's got has a capacity of 2,500 litres!

It's going to have to rain a LOT to have enough water in the tank.Even just toilets I imagine will need almost 100 liters a day (5 people).

Haven't done the maths Frodo, but they're 4 bedroom houses with a large lounge kitchen utility room + a decent sized garage, so that's a decent area of roof to collect water from if it rains for (typically) 3 or 4 hours at a time...

Although looking back over this month whilst there've been a good few grey, cloudy days, it's the 23rd of August and so far this month (i've just checked it out) we've had 157mm of rain with another 33 forecast to the end of the month. That's 190 mm of rain... How does that compare... how do they measure that?
Isn't it by how much rain falls into a funnel around 12" into a 1" tube or something... So how do you calculate 190mm of rain falling on a roof which is around 1,400sq ft?

Where's Hazel Grove when you need him?

You can find average yearly rainfall figures online.

It's not as simple as rainfall x roof area though. You need to consider the material that's covering your roof, how much of that rainfall is absorbed or splashes off and thus isn't collected. Think some coefficients for that may be available online for more common roof coverings.

Then you can at least see how it works out over a year, if you can harvest enough water or perhaps even a surplus. Then from that your potential financial saving.

I can't remember how they work out required tank size though, and that's going to be a fair factor in the cost of buying the system.

Seeing a photo of someone snowboarding in New Zealand wearing my lucky pants !! :icon_lol:

The weather this morning. Weird. Looking out at a very very fine mist , which you cant feel when outside. Weird, but I like it.

When I'm out on my bike with Susie, waving at cars like they're long lost friends and them half waving back...
You can see them thinking, "Who the fuck's that? Do I know him?"
