The Second Club Thread

He's always been a HUGE fan of Raith and knows his stuff.

As for Colin Cameron, he's an absolute legend at Raith

Still one of the worst takers of a corner I've even seen. Same floaty shit every single time, despite the fact it never fucking worked. Put some pace on it for once man!

2005 flashback rant over.
Dave Jones around 2002 when we hadn't scored from a corner all season and was asked if that was a problem.

"Why practice set pieces when we're scoring so many from open play".

Thanks Dave.

If you had Cameron's delivery allied with Berra's heading (at Wolves only it seems, as he scored elsewhere) then you'd have the ultimate 0 goals setup.

1) Fuck Atlanta.

2) Atlanta couldn't have been more Wolves-y; dominated the opening half hour but just got the 1 goal and totally folded after their OG. And the gap between their midfield and defense, as on both Abada goals, was all too familiar-looking.

3) How is it that MLS has VAR but not goal-line tech? Bizarre, and subsequently I'm not sure how I feel about the Atlanta OG ultimately counting. Also gives you guys a preview of the cringey decision announcements (though this ref spoke more gracefully than a lot of them; funny how uncomfortable they seem with it).

4) Fuck Atlanta.

5) Abada has a certain level of class you just don't find in this league too often. So good to see him continue to figure out how to influence matches with consistency.

6) Make no mistake, Atlanta caused a lot of their own problems, but Dean Smith noticeably pushed us into a more aggressive shape for the 2nd half and it worked a treat. I wasn't sure he had the confidence in the side to have us press so high, especially against Atlanta who do still have wonderful individual players (which we paid for on Xande Silva's excellent strike to make it 2-3).

7) Fuck Atlanta.

Oh, also, we took 2000 supporters to the match, which is, frankly, a bananas number in this league.

And for his good work, Liel Abada was named to the MLS Best XI for the week.

We're fairly tragic to watch going forward but my goodness are we excellent at dragging the opposition down to that level. Helps that Malanda and Privett are playing like a couple of 30 year olds at the back (and Privett isn't even a CB by training!) and utterly silencing attacking threats more often than not. It's been a long, long time since I've seen Benteke have such an anonymous match in this league. Lots of good things the squad can be proud of at the mo, even if creativity/finishing ain't one of them.

Only the one highlight from our 1-0 win against DC yesterday, above. Man, what a sound when the header went in, and some header at that!

4 points this week for Charlotte starting with...

Scott Arfield can do one. Not necessarily because of his red here (I'm not really sure what it was given for if I'm honest), but because he puts in Doherty levels of effort. Why he started this one in the first place is a mystery to me. Bit of a bummer to cough up an equalizer so soon after going ahead whilst shorthanded, but hard to be too mad at a point when we spent ~60' with 10 men.

Agyemang with a brace in a 0-2 win up in Philly, one a really fantastic header and one I'm choosing to believe happened because of power and not because of shit goalkeeping.

We're up to 3rd in the East! nosebleed.jpg

A couple of losses for Charlotte this week past, so no big updates there from me this time. However, did want to shout out Charlotte’s Colombian population for truly showing out last night (we can ignore the post-match shenanigans for now):

I’ve been neglecting this thread recently but should be giving a thorough update soon with MLS now on a break. Suffice to say Charlotte are still very agricultural in possession but by and large the players know their roles in all phases which by itself is such an insane improvement over last season.

Cheers to those who enjoy the updates. 👑

Sounds like Abada has started to settle in. Good player isn't he.

At times I think he’s still surprised by the step up in defending (which from my perspective has made it seem like the standard of defending in Scotland must really be poor these days; MLS defenders are improving rapidly on average, but…), but he’s a player, similar to Moutinho or Ruben, who has that inexplicable level of class with the ball under his control. There are things in his locker that only top, top players can do.

He’s so much fun to watch run at defenders; it’s always hilarious to watch opposing teams tilt their shape massively when Liel swaps wings with Vargas.

I love that he clearly holds himself to a higher standard (never the one pointing at others, always reacts like he’s the one who could have improved things, even if it’s not always the case). He has a real sense of ownership over his performance levels which you don’t always get from DPs (hello, and fuck you, Rafa Marquez).

Final note: I think he’d replace the turf at BofA with grass by himself, by hand of he could. I get the clear sense that he hates the way the ball is affected by the harder surface.

It won't just be the standard of defending, at Celtic he was in a team which is pretty much continuously attacking, especially under Postecoglou. He will have always had an overload on his side and players like Hatate & O'Reilly supporting centrally playing as very attacking 8s. Only natural at Dean Smith's Charlotte that he'd have more to do defensively and would be more isolated in forward areas. He's definitely got the quality to make up for that though. I'd back him to establish himself as one of the better players in the league over the next few years if you can keep hold of him.

That he has the impact he does is still a great credit to him; he’s head and shoulders above our other attacking midfielders/wingers and has basically zero help centrally. God bless Brandt Bronico, my Carolinian brother, but he’s a middling (at best) MLS #8 being played as a #10, and he just can’t do it.

Smith has us in a pretty standard 4-2-3-1 so that #10 spot is crucial for sustaining attacks and possession. As it is we’re a more solid version of Marsch’s Leeds (I know, I know, but having good fullbacks really changes the calculus on that tactical ethos).

St Pauli's start:

Heidenheim (H)
Union Berlin (A)
Augsburg (A)
Leipzig (H)
Freiburg (A)
Mainz (H)

Leipzig aside, a decent chance of early points there. Don't get them and it might start looking grim.

When I was a regular attendee in 2001/02 they won 1 out of their first 18 games.

Beat Norwich 3-1 today at Carrow Road and it was 3-0 at HT. Promising.
