The Royals

I’d expect better from someone well educated like myself.
“ grow a pair” do you want to put that in context?
I think I pretty much had a pair when I served 9 years in services and in the second gulf war.
I m sorry but what the fuck has being in the forces got to do with the price of fish?

You are not the forum censor. Don't like what I write, put me on ignore.

I'm not engaging in the Royals debate at all. I am bemoaning excessive coverage which assumes the entire population feels the same as you.

It WOULD be completely inappropriate to be engaging in the "Royals" debate at this time. Hence I am not.

You complained 3 times within half an hour of it being announced, what the fuck did you expect?! If you want to avoid coverage of it maybe avoid the thread dedicated to it too?

Quite surprised the number of comments like that I've seen from ex/current forces individuals too. Similar to you I'd always assumed it was just lip service as part of the old routine, had no idea so many really invested in that phrase so heavily.
You do realise that the reigning monarch is Commander-in-Chief?

I was in Paddy Power's Rathmines when the twin towers came down.
I remember the Diana over-reaction and false sentimentality. Can't remember what I was doing when her demise was reported.

It’s about having just a tiny ounce of respect for those who’re upset by this. My comment says it can wait don’t mind the debate but think of the timing.
This isn’t a bad football result this is a death of someone people had a lot of respect for.
If you saw someone was upset about this
I have treated it as such i expect pricks to go abuse i choose to ignore it.

The country will mourn, some will be nobs such is life

This comment really, really could’ve been made at least 24 hours after the event.
Some on here are clearly upset, you say you don’t care but felt the need to click on the thread and make numerous inflammatory comments.
It's an Internet forum. You don't have to like all the comments but don't try and police them.

Just turned SSN on to see if they're talking about Costa, and Sky News have taken it over with the Queen.

Hundreds of people milling around in the dark outside Buckingham Palace while it pisses down. Why?!!! There's no-one even there you bunch of weapons.

Can't wait to see them all out there tomorrow in their Union Jack suits bawling their eyes out for the TV cameras. Or not, as I won't be turning it on.

I have a suggestion coming from a genuinely impartial and constructive perspective. The following isn’t meant to sound pointed at all. Why not take all the things about this, mainly the coverage and the reaction, that evidently annoy some people to the ‘New - things that really annoy…’ thread, which seems perfectly titled for it, and leave this one for folks who would like to reflect more reverently (for wont of a better word) on the passing of the Queen. Then everyone can have their rightful say and be happier. While the cut and thrust and general niggle of an Internet forum is great, perhaps a little bit of respect both ways, as Tredman said, would be delivered that way? Then after a bit everyone can get stuck in again in the rough and tumble that is the hallmark of our treasured democracy etc etc

A bit like when football fans gather at an empty stadium to pay their respects to a legend when they pass?

Pop it on Sniffers new thread I suggest. Isn’t this one to debate whether to get rid of them.

Largely just a ceremonial thing these days though isn't it? Not like years gone by when they would've shared the battlefield with their monarch and they'd have had their most trusted men at arms by their sides. Even the most involving conflicts our nation has seen in modern times haven't really been a direct threat to the monarch as such have they?

I would've thought for vast majority the pride in the unit they serve and the mutual protection of those they serve beside would have trumped their connection to the monarch significantly.

In a considerably lower stakes comparison I do my job to assist my colleagues and deliver projects well rather than please the man who's name sits above the door. I suppose everyone has their own motivations though.

I’m going to guess you don’t know many people in the military Mark.

Not many no, but none of them have every mentioned any great passion for the monarchy, certainly not as their primary motivation for their service.

You can be upset if something is secondary or tertiary motive too.

I haven't dismissed anyone's feelings, I was merely surprised those feelings existed in such volume because it's different to my previous experience through people I know.
