The Road to World Cup 2026 and UEFA Nations League

Jack Charlton was the catalyst, picked every failed English player who’d once drunk a pint of Guinness.
Jack Charlton was a superb manager for Ireland.

And no problem with him using what was available to him. The only dodgy one was Tony Cascarino who as it turned out had zero Irish heritage.

Besides which they had the likes of Paul McGrath, Denis Irwin, Pat Bonner, Steve Staunton, Kevin Moran, David O'Leary, Liam Brady, Roy Keane, Frank Stapleton, Ronnie Whelan, Niall Quinn, nothing non-Irish about any of them.

As for nationality, who's to say to anyone else what they should identify as? Good luck telling Mick McCarthy he's English.

And if we're pointing fingers, John Barnes wasn't remotely qualified to play for England, nor was Tony Dorigo.

Didn't Barnes come here when he was 10? Would easily have been able to get a UK passport way before his debut.

12 I think.

But these days I don't think he would qualify for England at all. He'd have had to play for Jamaica or no-one.

Barnsey was from just south of the Watford gap according to the Anfield Rap, basically Kenny Jackett ;)

Why's that? Can't you qualify on residency?
Don't think so any more. Or at least we don't go down that road.

If you've got zero blood links to a country then generally no. There was talk of Cudicini and Arteta playing for England because Italy/Spain didn't want them and it never happened.

Even under the old rules Barnes was as eligible for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as he was England.

Barnesy, you can't reverse the s and the e. Yes that's many decades of angst
Can open, worms everywhere

Although I've now annoyed myself.

"Saint and Greavsie" I can accept but they're the wrong way round on the photo

I'm fairly certain no-one has a problem with Dave Edwards playing for Wales or Steven Fletcher playing for Scotland.

I've just always had a problem with people knocking Big Jack and that Irish team, they should be celebrated as a triumph.

Playing for England or reversing the 's' and the 'e'

Just watching Germany vs Italy, Udogie and Kean have no blood links to Italy

What Chanel is that on?

It's not as bad as I remember it actually. Only these 4 stand out although McAteer and Cascarino weren't qualified at all.

John Aldridge
Tony Cascarino
Andy Townsend
Jason McAteer
