The R.I.P. Thread

60's singer Bobby Vee has sadly passed away. Most on here would never have seen him, but he was a very good vocalist. And his biggest hit, The Night has a Thousand Eyes is still played regularly on radio stations.

R.I.P.

Carlos Alberto has died aged 72.

Dave Lanning from the darts has died at the age of 78

Jimmy young,ex DJ on radio one and two,and originally a singer has died aged 95

Leonard Cohen going today has made me utterly dejected.

He's provided the music for my life, my dad played him endlessly when I was younger as I have played him endlessly since I left home. Even my first dog was named after him. Really don't know what to say, he was simply the greatest artist I have ever heard or read.

As lyricists go, there was none better. Leonard Cohen > Bob Dylan

He played here 4 times over the last 10 years and I missed each one. my friend went and said it was the most civilised gig ever, 5,000 people sitting on the lawn of the Museum of Modern Art, champagne and strawberries given free upon arrival, a 3 hour gig with choir.... you won't get another gig like that.

I find it difficult to be too sad about Leonard Cohen. I love his work and he seemed a great man (and the voice a great advert for smoking) but he had a good innings, wrote some of the greatest songs ever and seemed to have come to terms with his impending death. His last album, released a few weeks ago is brilliant and much like Bowie's last album, seemed to be saying goodbye.

He wrote a letter to Marianne Ihlen (the subject of "Marianne" and other songs) just before she died earlier in the year. It's beautiful:

Well Marianne, it’s come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon.
Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine.
And you know that I’ve always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don’t need to say anything more about that because you know all about that.
But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road.

Saw him at Glastonbury in 2008. One of the great songwriters.

great post. and RIP to a great song writer.

He bought a house and came to live here in Greece, and has been all over the TV all day.

I have had so much pleasure from this great man for so many years, and his music has filled me with unnatural calm and serenity, on the many occassions I have sorely needed it.

I will celebrate his passing in the best way possible, with his music, which no god can take away.
