Err, are we talking about the same Tony Allen?

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/may/03/tony-allen-obituary

Creator of the beat behind afrobeat which in turn is behind most of modern dance / hip-hop? The guy Brian Eno said was possibly the greatest drummer ever?

No idea why Ringo comes into it, but he gets a lot of undue stick

Yep, we are talking about the same Tony Allen. I saw him live at a Damon Albarn gig 10 years ago with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

Good drummer but not even close to the greatest drummers of all time.

When he was late 60s, performing in one of Albarn's 'look at me' projects? Have a look at some of the Fela stuff on youtube, the guy was phenomenal.

Ringo was a great drummer. Influential but not in a flashy way.

See, this is the problem when people band the word 'best' about it tends to be confused with favourite, for example my favourite drummer was John Bonham, in my mind cannot be beaten at what he did, but was he the best, Oh God no ! technically Bill Bruford, Simon Phillips, Neil Peart and dozens of others were all better, At the minute Marco Minnemann is my favoruite and probably one of the best in the world, but the best, probably not

The Beatles sound didn't really lend itself to hardcore drum solos. Starr was a decent drummer, he was making a career out of it before the Beatles came along. He wouldn't get on any "Best Drummers Of All Time" lists, though.

Ringo was a very underrated drummer who totally fitted his purpose, he wont get on any best drummer lists, but he'd get on a lot of influential ones.

I'll have Stephen Morris as my top drummer. Ultimately though, if you don't like the band they play in, you probably won't rate them...

Ginger Baker was probably the most technically proficient I've ever seen (from clips) but he was a right cunt, so he can do one.

For me, the most technically proficient is Thomas Lang, but I always felt his solo's lacked 'musicality'. They always seem to be a showcase of rudiments and stick tricks at ridiculous speed.

I prefer someone who makes a beat more of a theme out of a solo, like Danny Carey

These 2 heavily influenced more style for those different reasons back when I played in rock bands

Dave Lombardo, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Gene Hoglan, Vinnie Paul - all immensely impressive

But as Dan says, if you don't like the music you probably won't appreciate the ability of the drummer as it won't be what you are listening for.

Honest mate look up some videos of Marco Minnemann plays with the Aristocrats, Steve Vai, Dream Theatre Satriani etc etc.
I was always a massive fan of this guy !

Ginger Baker's greatest achievement was living as long as he did. Massive twats that smoke, drink and take drugs to excess for that much of their lives don't tend to get to retirement age.
