The Official World Cup 2018 Megathread

I've had to watch it sober because I'm on nights but bring on Saturday

Nags?

What a result, I weirdly felt very serene going into pens, knew we'd miss one (thought it would be Kane) but felt pretty confident. Hope Southgate has learnt the lesson that this team wants to attack and not sit back though. Felt his subs didn't help us tonight.

I think a lot of talk on here during the game was very harsh. We'd have seen a very different game if Colombia had any intention of trying to play football.

I thought we were finished at the start of extra time but came back into it by the end. To do that and keep our nerve in the shootout against that approach from the opposition is something to be proud of.

But yes, we can do better and we looked bereft of everything after they equalised but we more than deserved it IMO.

Correct on all points

Never thought that Kane would fail - wasn't anywhere as confident about Dier though

I spent all evening saying we would lose on penalties. We were so clearly the better team it just felt like typical England we would fuck it up and go out on penalties. This genuinely feels like a new feeling to win on pens. [emoji3]

Hopefully this experience will have galvanized the team, forged them together in the fire of a dirty Colombian team with the belief of a team who have won the first ever penalty shootout their country has ever won

The psychological effects of winning a penalty shoot out can never be under estimated

When Henderson stepped up I turned away from the screen...unfortunately there was one behind me!

Great win against a team that didn't try to play football, and winning it via a pen shootout, oh my days!

Absolutely wrecked guys. Bottle of navy rum has been demolished. Ooops. Work at 7. Guess I am cycling the 12?miles to work.

I'm with you cyber. Wall to wall meeting tomorrow at head office and a late flight home. Going to be a right mess :)

Not a Ryan Giggs fan but he called it right at the end about midfield subs.

Well I watched all of that with no alcohol and I didn't swear once as I was watching with Mini Langers.

I'm quite proud of me.

Completely agree Langers. Lots to learn from and still in a tournament I thought we’d be out of by now. Should be happy about that, I know I am!

I've been on the Black Sheep, it's not Abbots but I'm assuming it's ok?!

We managed the game well until the Dier sub which invited them onto us. We were in no trouble whatsoever at that point as Colombia had nothing to hurt us. That sub, the drop in the defensive line and the lack of pressure high up the pitch let them back into it.

We were abysmal in the first half of extra time, but we played well in the second half, finding space to exploit in the channels in and drawing them out of position again.

I'm delighted we're through, but we have to work on retaining the ball as a means to killing games off. That should have been comfortable.

Oh and tomorrow is going is going to hurt horribly.

RLC needs to be the first sub, if not starting. He's the only player we have who can muscle his way from defence to attack.

McGuire was awesome, sterling is useless and Colombia should have stuck to playing football because everything else they did was unadulterated white!

Nah, no need for that. Sterling was good, but lumping balls up to him was never going to work.

I'm drained. Fucking drained. Roll on Saturday and we do it all again
