The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

If they are going to be able to be that exact as to whether a player is offside or not then I’d rather they changed to offside rule to favour the attacker.
I like accuracy in decisions but I agree with this. Head, knees or feet. The rest of the body like shoulders shouldn't count.

If you could make it instant like goal line technology then I'd be in favour even for the toenail ones, because that takes you back to the old world of the linesmans flag. Whether it's the lines or the semi automated thing they have in place means little to me if decisions are still made a significant period of time post the goal.
The plan is for very quick decisions but at the moment it's still checked by a human but even with that I don't think it ends the celebrate a goal and then have it taken off you.
Would be 30 seconds or so rather than 3 mins though.

I quite like Oatley.

He has been up since 4am, sleep deprivation kicking in

Hartson clearly hasn't watched football for the last year as he is amazed at how late an offside call is made by the lino

I'm going to jinx it and make a red card happen in this game - but I'm amazed there hasn't been a sending off in the tournament yet

I didn’t think my opinion of Oatley was a secret tbh

If offside decisions are instant that would be an improvement. But if they are going to use the TV cameras then they still won't be accurate. Given the frame rates players can be ~30cm different from one frame to another. Which makes all the toenail/nostril hair offside calls even more ridiculous.
And it needs every through pass checked, not just the ones that directly lead to a goal. Too many offsides not given that still lead to the attackers getting an unfair advantage.

Hawkeye is much, much faster than broadcast framerates - 340 fps - for this exact reason.

#14 for Tunisia is a ton of fun to watch.

That's the rules setters not the technology.

The tech is only used once the decision is made which is a bit arse about face. But the computing power used to speed things up is impressive even if the graphics are shite for the viewer.

You'd think the technology will only get quicker in the next few years, maybe even replacing the Lino's flag with an automated version.

Decent game so far, Tunisia have been excellent, can Denmark improve?

Looking forward to the introduction of technology that enables a lino to give a throw in the correct way when looking straight at the incident instead of having to rely on the ref who is 50 yards away from the action...

That would be some computing power needed for that.

It can certainly be quicker and with a button on the linos flag could be almost instantaneous.

The cost of the tech is the real killer, IMO.
