The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Just about as good as Argentina could’ve hopped for can probably now start thinking about Sunday.

Not sure what this says about Argentina, but they're about make the Final with Emi having conceded more goals (5) than he has made saves (4).

Like I love Messi, it's been a genuine pleasure to watch him in his career, and he's hands down the best player that ever lived, but fuck me the commentator wankathon has been too much. He could drop a log on the centre spot and there'd be three replays of it while McCoist tells us it's the best shit he's ever seen. Wind it in a bit ffs

I like McCoist but he is the biggest ass kisser along with Jim White that ever existed.

France are getting back to back world cups I think, and likely to get the Rugby World Cup next year too.

Fucking ace time to be working with a load of Frenchies; it’s hard work pretending I’m only really bothered about cricket*

*boss is Australian so this is going to bite me in the ass soon.

Pretty poor from Croatia, they reminded me of an upmarket version of us for most of this season.
Plenty of of possession and passing in area’s that are never gonna hurt the opposition, a defence prone to catastrophic errors and absolutely no cutting edge.

Long office day so just watched highlights. It's nice to see pundits calling out Peter Walton for being full of shit and his schophancy going to a wider TV audience. It is a massive shame it's on an occasion when he was right though.

Damp squib that.

Been a poor tournament overall, so few games of quality (there's been drama, but there's drama in the Welsh league, doesn't make it good).

The other day I described it as "boring but exciting", this is a much better way to put it.

There were no outstanding teams , that much is true . I did think it was entertaining though and kept our attention . There have been very few outstanding tournaments over the years .

The standard of football in 2014 and 2018 was way higher. Both were very good tournaments.

Bar 10 crazy minutes in the Argentina vs Netherlands game (all down to Argentina not being able to deal with 1983 tactics), England vs France has been the only genuinely good knockout game, it's been either walkovers or tepid dross otherwise.

Thought Portugal Morocco was genuinely involving. Though I was just very excited to be in the pub in the middle of the day with Bathams and Boltmaker on.

Do agree that the general standard has been meh - and I’d include France in that too, albeit they’re obvious favourites.

I actually did enjoy watching Messi last night, though I know the default on most platforms is to sneer. Pundits are annoying / too much on him, but they’re annoying about everything.

As regards the quality of football, I tend to agree but there has been drama in some of the games I've seen. I agree England v France has been the best game so far, pity it wasn't the final. There are turgid matches in every world Cup, suspect it will be worse next time.
