The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Not sure what English imperialism would have to do with it?
There's been a number of comments in the last couple of pages about a "lack of culture" etc. That's what I mean.

In many cases, I'm sure it's unconscious, but it's still there. In other cases, it's overt and celebrated. I'm sure we can all think of a poster on here for whom it's the latter.

The home nations all have their own football associations so that’s the end of the discussion.

Have there? It’s a genuine issue for a good many countries that we have this - take most African countries and they are a genuine imperial construct, usually of groups of people who speak entirely different languages. They often fail to understand why we are special and they are not.

He was clueless and just inconsistent classic example being not giving a foul on Saka in the build up to the first goal. Then doesn’t give the most obvious foul on Kane on the edge of the box. Second half he books Henderson when Mbappe tripped over his own feet.
With the Kane foul almost certain he thought I’ll let VAR work that one out.

Henderson wasn't booked. Saka is a foul but Kane was looking for the pen imo, seen them given but I thought it was minimal contact and he dived.

Seen a lot

Never said it was a penalty, not sure how you can look for a foul when someone puts his legs across the back of your calf’s.

Through his legs actually and if kane continues his normal movement he'd likely have stepped over the leg but he just ragdolled. It was on the line so if it's a foul it's a pen.

Sorry that’s garbage if he was looking for the foul and penalty he would have ensured he was clearly in the area and gone down then not on the edge leaving it to chance.

Purely a hypothetical anyway, as I said I fully expect that it would be about as popular an idea with supporters as the ESL.

FIFA would be more than happy with it, the UK as we know it is on its last legs anyway I’d be very surprised if Scotland isn’t independent within 20 years.

I know you have an anti Kane agenda (most of us do) but the guy put his leg between Kanes and tripped him up, its a foul all day long. Anyway it was outside the area.

That's utter rubbish.

You are literally the only person that isn't French that thinks that

Your hate of Kane is blindsiding your football judgement.

Yep it’s not a penalty because it’s just outside but it’s a foul. Trust me if a Wolves player goes down like that when we reconvene and it’s not given people would go mad.

I don't think too many England fans would care. England fans still wave Union flags and sing "Rule Britannia" at matches, despite not representing the whole Union and not being Britannia. A lot of English people don't appreciate the difference at all. During Covid, for example, there were a number of reports on Welsh news about English tourists (from as close as the West Midlands) getting stopped by police in Wales for gathering on Welsh beaches and the tourists' responses were things like, "but Wales and England are all the same place" or "but Wales is in England".

And it's because of attitudes like that that the Welsh FA would never want to join a UK-wide association as the identity of the smaller nations would become lost.

(And we'd all have to sing GSTK, which even English people agree is the worst anthem ever. Worse even than Australia's).

As a Welshman, you can get in the sea with that one. I don't mind the occasional thing (like the Lions in rugby), but no, no, and utterly no. There's enough problems with English Imperialism as it is.

Remember that the old Home Internationals is the oldest international competition in the world.

As for England v France, then the better team won I'm afraid. It was close, and England could have won with different refereeing decisions, but ultimately France did enough to go through. If you start missing penalties in the last few minutes of the game, then it's all over.
ABE Alive and well with that comment.

They really weren't the better team. It was a really tight game between two very even teams.

The difference was a missed pen. That's it.

It's a pen. Check the laws out, if the foul continues into the area then it's a pen. It's pretty clear it continued into the area

This is the part where I disagree. IMO the contact is outside the box and only “continues into the area” because Kane makes sure he falls that way (which I don’t hold against him, of course you’re going to try to draw the ref into a decision there).

It is foul for me but outside the area so VAR’s hands are tied (which is a whole other discussion).
