The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Not sure taking a pep talk from Jamie Vardy is something I’ll adhere to. The master WUM when he scores.
Mind games in penalties is nothing new, once you’ve won just celebrate you’ve hurt the opponents exactly where it hurts.
Had roles been reversed the vitriol would have been epic ie 2006 QF when Argentina went into meltdown after going out.
Fuck that, the Dutch deserved their faces rubbed in it.

Your anti-Argrntina rhetoric belongs in the 80's with the S*n newspaper and its readers.

Mind games are the keeper coming out to greet the taker or delaying it. Not multiple players having pops at the taker as they walk down, it's out of order. Argentina were relatively restrained I'd have had the whole team celebrate in their faces.

Grant Wahl the US journalist who made headlines wearing the rainbow t shirt in Qatar collapsed and died at the game yesterday aged 48 and in general good health. His own brother believes he was murdered, although thus far there doesn't appear to be any evidence to support that.
I’m shook at this. Grant has been a mainstay of coverage here for ages.

I understand why lots of people in this country have a violent dislike of Argentina. I’m not typing to change minds, we all get bent out of shape on various things, self included of course.

Thought I’d say I love the place and the people. I spent a lot of time there, mostly on my bicycle, and it’s just such a hospitable and beautiful place. Happy memories include watching England win the rugby World Cup and loads of Argentineans joining in the celebrations. Also the hospitality around Rio Grande and Ushuaia despite it being where most of the very poor conscripts came from who got killed in the Falklands. Turns out though that it might not be so clever if you’re a rich English twat to turn up and make jokes about it down there - I’d have joined in chasing Clarkson out - so people from all countries can be equally opportunity nob heads, turns out.

Back to the footy: Morocco and England wins for me today. A complete guess.

Going for a comfortable Portugal win and a classic in the other. I reckon a Desmond in 90 mins, after that, you can toss a coin.

Funnily enough wouldn’t despair if we went behind, we’d be forced to get at them and an equaliser would give us momentum. As bizarre as it sounds would probably be more nervous if we went in front - early.

Just can’t call it but reckon we’ll give them a right good game. Fingers crossed for a cracker.

I would love to visit Argentina. Wine in Mendoza. Gauchos. More beef than you can possibly eat. Mountains. Wonderful climate. Game at La Bombanera. Lots to like.

Plus Ushaia looks incredible. Most southerly city on the planet makes it a bucket list point.

Small update on Wahl: he apparently went to urgent care in the last week. Looked serious for a minute but then seemed to be on the mend. Then yesterday happened.

I won’t get into the Argentina thing except to say that empire is an evil that must be rooted out at every opportunity. And I do realize the irony of that, coming from an American.

Just to make things clear I’m not some sort of “little Englander” or anti Argentinian that some seemed to have coined me with.
Point 1 I don’t think they’re as good as some make them out to be.
Point 2 imo they got ultimate revenge last night with going through would just like a bit of class maybe.

Trouble there Alan is the Falkland Islanders want to be British
I would qualify that as something different from an Imperial system of rule. Communities should be free to throw in with larger powers if they so wish, they just shouldn’t have a gun put to their head before they decide.

This, of course, is simplifying the conflict a bit and I'm no expert. It likely won't shock you to know that we don't cover the conflict in school here.

Ruben starts for Portugal. Think that's the only chance, Ramos continues upfront.

With Brazil yesterday - anyone else love that Neymar didn't even get to take a pen? I always find it hilarious when a player demands the 5th kick as he wants to win the game then they lose beforehand.

Always put your best takers up first personally.
