The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

Besides England, it's excellent that Wales and the 2 Irelands have progressed especially Wales as group winners

There are some fantastic ties there. The tournament has really come to life over the last couple of nights.

I'm really looking forward to Wales v N Ireland actually, may the best team win....

The benefit of the 24 team format, I s'pose, that nearly every single team still had a chance to advance even at the third round.

I wasn't sure about it and i guess many still aren't but i've enjoyed the tournament, i think the sides that have just tried to defend would have done so anyway in a 16 team tournament. I'm hoping it stays at 24 teams in 2020 now.

Yep, you can argue in circles about the quality of the overall field, but IMO that argument could have existed with the 16 team format.

Personally I prefer this method as IIRC there was only one mathematically eliminated nation after GW2 (Ukraine).

I don't think you can ever be satisfied with a format where a team has gone through without winning a single game.

I still think the setup has engendered way too much negative football, it's been a strong finish to the group stage but there were some appalling matches along the way. Then you have a situation where Northern Ireland (and I'm not knocking them by any stretch of the imagination) were more or less playing for a 1-0 defeat! That isn't tournament football to me.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, I s'pose. I find myself subscribing somewhat to the Tony Pulis school of tactics. If you have to defend to play to your strengths, then that's what you have to do.

I have no qualms whatsoever with NI's tactics or anything that is considered to be "negative". IMO the object is to win, not be fashionable.

England have the worst game, Icelnad Are everyone's Leicester side , so we just need to go out and dispel the myth.

Though I have to say if Iceland win, there will be no tears.

Although!!! I have to work at 6am tomorrow morning and I am currently still on the cypro on behalf of Ireland ha ha ha

I would imagine Croatia & Belgium are rubbing their hands together on their side of the draw. Looking at how the ties have panned out I think it will be a Croatia v Germany final.

I'm sure there will be the odd surprise in there along the way though!

Many teams have made no effort to win games though, they've put men behind the ball with no other thought than scraping a point, or even a narrow loss.

The format may have created openness and uncertainty but not so much entertainment.

Wales 1 Belgium 0
Belgium 0 Wales 0

last two meetings. A Wales v Belgium quarter final would be no sure thing. I reckon it would go all the way to penalties.

However I agree that Croatia should be favourites from that side.

So the next round is:-

Switzerland v Poland switzerland AET
Croatia v Portugal Croattia
Wales v Northern Ireland Wales
Hungary v Belgium Hungary- Belgium looked ok against an out of sorts Ireland thats it. Hungary are up for it
Germany v Slovakia. Could be a shock here Slovakia
Italy v Spain- Italy after Ramos gets a red card
France v Republic Ireland. Revenge will be sweet for Thierry Hand ball 1-2
England v Iceland 2-0 England

Pick the quarter-finalists out of that lot!

I think there will be shocks. Some of the big names will fall at this stage. There have been no big name sendings off yet . Its a major tournament it has to happen and it will cost the team who loses a player. I fancy Ramos to get he walk of shame handing italy the win. Slovakia to bore trhe hell out of Germany and win on the break. Hungary are on a roll and remind me of Denmark 1992! No fear nothing to lose. Ireland will either capitulate against the French or beat them. I hope the latter. I fear the former.

Switzerland
Italy
Hungary
Ireland
Wales
England
Croatia
Slovakia

But my head says Germany and France !

Wales 1 Belgium 0
Belgium 0 Wales 0

Would just fancy Belgium to have that little bit more quality in the areas that matter, if they were in a knock out match up with Wales. But tip of the cap where it's due, winning that group has put you in the better side of the draw and you have every chance.

It's not a given Wales will get past N Ireland and I think it'll be a very tight game, but you just fancy Wales have a bit more quality to unlock NI.

Not the game I wanted for sure. I would have been far happier playing Turkey I think. It will be tough.

Sick of seeing people referring to it as "the Battle of Britain" as well. Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain.

Correct Great Britain and Northern Ireland, first time that Wales have been clear favourites so far so it'll be interesting to see how they approach it.
I'd imagine pretty much the same as the Russia game can't see to much changing to the line up either.
