The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

I think Italy will now rest players wholesale. The result against the Irish is irrelevant to them and they will want everyone fit and raring to go for Spain. Might just suit Ireland.

Could still send out this kind of team though (taking out everyone who's on a yellow):

------------------------Sirigu-----------------------

Darmian-------Ogbonna------Barzagli-------De Sciglio

----------Sturaro-----Parolo----Florenzi------------

----------Zaza--------Immobile-----El Shaarawy--------

That is more than good enough to beat Ireland if they're intent on still playing a bad version of their Euro 88 tactics. And if talk of Daryl Murphy starting is right...that is exactly what Ireland will do and it'll be as shit as it was vs Belgium.

We know Groups B and C have qualifying third place teams.

If it is A B C D (hugely unlikely)
Albania plays Germany. Northern Ireland plays France. Slovakia plays Croatia. Turkey plays Wales

If B C D E
Northern Ireland plays France. Wales plays Turkey. Slovakia plays Germany. E Third plays Croatia

B C E F
Northern Ireland plays Wales. France plays Third E. Slovakia plays Germany. F Third plays Croatia

B C D F
France plays Northern Ireland. Turkey plays Wales. Slovakia plays Germany. F Third plays France

France gets Northern Ireland or Slovakia. Germany gets Albania or Slovakia. We get bloody Spain ffs! PAH!!

So carnage scenario would be B C E F (Sweden beating Belgium is the way that can happen) with Portugal finishing second in F (Austria beating Iceland and Hungary and Portugal drawing would achieve that). If so the second round would be

Switzerland v Poland
Croatia v Austria
Wales v Northern Ireland
Hungary v Sweden
Germany v Slovakia
Italy v Spain
France v Belgium / Rep Ireland
England v Portugal

What an almighty mess, hopefully this situation will be addressed. I do not want there to be 32 teams on the finals, but at least doing that would mean only the top two going through. Preferably though, I would rather it was reduced back to the sixteen team format, but that will not happen.

The causing of the bottom heavy look to the draw is down to two fuck ups by Spain and England. That defeat tonight will just give Spain the kick up the backside nothing more.

Actually Germany are down to play Italy or Spain if they get through to the quarters as well. So that side of the draw being heavily loaded isn't really that big an issue, we can only play one of those three teams and that's if we get to the semi (when you would expect to play a big hitter anyway).

We should win the last 16 game as it's pretty unlikely to be Portugal, then it's probably France who've played worse than us so far.

No obvious standout team so far, it's wide open. Clearly we need to improve if we want to go far but there isn't anyone to seriously fear that we have no chance of beating.

True potential route to the final is Hungary, France and Spain.
Other side it would be Turkey, Belguim and Croatia.
Actually think Turkey are slightly better than Hungary if that's who we get.

Spain or Italy's route to the final is the toughest. Spain/ Italy, then Germany then France/ England. Now that's tough!

Quarter finals (with the potential to play well and beat a decent side) was a realistic ambition before the tournament and it still is now. It will be very interesting if we do play against a 'stronger' team to see how they will approach the game against us, and how that will change our own game.

I'm confident if we do meet France in the QF we'll put in a good show just depends whether it's enough.

I agree.

I also think we've played better than I expected, despite having 3 negative sides come and stifle us. We may not have scored enough as our finishing is the main thing letting us down, but we've carved out openings. Hopefully we'll be given more of a game on Monday, no matter who we end up facing.

Other than the very top teams, every other team will be well advised to come and park the bus against us as it seems we don't have quite enough quality to break down packed defences, and we're always liable to ship a goal ourselves.

That said I've been impressed with the way we've played. We look reasonably comfortable in possession for the first time I can remember, and we are at least trying to work opportunities with passing and movement rather than hitting long hopeful balls.

I think if that's the way the draw panned out could see Wales quite easily making the semis

I need to slightly revise it I think. Best way for Portugal to finish second is Iceland and Portugal both win by the same score. So you would swap around Hungary and Austria, and then replace Austria with Iceland. Same effect of brutal bottom half and rather less brutal top half though.

Depends on which Wales turns up if it's the one that played Russia they've every chance not so much if they play like they did against England.

Absolutely. I think they now know they have to play like against Russia though. Park the bus isn't going to really work so might as well go for it and see what happens.

Got to hand it to you Paddy, you really believed in wales, good luck in the knockouts
