The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

Guardian reckon this is the team tomorrow:

-----------------------Hart--------------------------

Clyne---------Cahill-----------Smalling--------Bertrand

---------Henderson----Dier-----Wilshere--------------

---------Lallana-------Sturridge-------Vardy----------------

No Rooney? Happy to see Bertrand in there though.

England team tonight is supposedly 433
Hart
Clyne
Smalling
Cahill
Bertrand
Dier
Wilshere
Henderson
Vardy
Sturridge
Lallana

Edit sorry didn't see earlier post

That's a good looking team. No point in risking Rooney, he's not that young and has played a lot of football over the last 12 years.

I would be surprised if Rooney does not start unless he has an injury.

Likewise Walker, who has been excellent in both games. Though the team above is more than capable of getting a result, and it'd mean they were fresh for the next round.

Henderson worries me though. I can see me moaning about him throughout the match.

Can't wait for Henderson's 27th England appearance of complete and utter nothingness.

I think rotating the full backs makes some sense, Pochettino does it quite often, they get through a lot of work in this system and this is three games in ten days. Personally I'd have dropped Rose anyway as he's rubbish.

Clearly I wouldn't play Henderson but it seems Milner played himself out of contention vs Russia.

Henderson's a waste of skin. No idea why he's even fucking there let alone troubling the first team.

It's quite a good team, on paper - apart from Henderson. He just never, ever makes anything happen. But I suppose it makes sense to give some minutes to the players on the fringe of the starting 11, providing we win. Which we should.

Henderson is the Sissoko of the English team only without the one run. Feel a bit for Milner I think he's decent just didn't have a good game against Russia.

I get the feeling the Dier is to take Hamsik out of the game as he did Ramsey in the 2nd half against Wales.

I believe England will have a far better chance without Rooney and his Hollywood ball syndrome which kills the tempo of the game. Far better to add Wilshere with his capacity to break lines with his forward thinking probing. Kane would benefit immensely with the inclusion of such players, and when the going gets tough England will require Harry Kane.

Well I think it's madness to drop Rooney and Alli personally. With Henderson and Wilshere there there is zero creativity or ability to get forward.

I agree with Sturridge and Vardy coming in but you are relying on them and Lallana completely to make things happen. Vardy is going to struggle as Slovakia will likely defend quite deep against him, and Sturridge can be very wasteful. Lallana is going to have to have a very good game IMO.

The full-backs changing is fine. Bertrand is better than Rose and Clyne is on a par with Walker just not as quick.

I can see it finishing 0-0!!

Not necessarily. It all depends exactly which four groups qualify a 3rd place team.

Assuming we win the group then we play one of A3/C3/D3. If ALL of those groups have their 3rd placed team qualify, then in the table I posted above there are 3 combinations for ACD all qualifying - ABCD, ACDE, ACDF. All of those result in playing group D's team which is likely going to be Czech Republic because of Turkey's rubbish goal difference.

If Northern Ireland finish 3rd in group C, there's only one combination of groups that will see us playing them - BCEF

There are 7 combinations each for playing the team from group A or group D, and just the one for group C. So it's virtually 50/50 going to be Albania or Czech Republic.

-------------

As an aside, looking at group D, if Czech Republic beat Turkey by 2 goals and Croatia lose to Spain, then Croatia would drop to 3rd, because the Czech v Croatia game was 2-2 so head to head record would be equal and it'd go down to overall goal difference in the group. Then as mentioned above, we'd have almost a 50/50 chance of getting them instead of Albania.

Crazily though, if Croatia lose 1-0 and Czech Republic win 1-0 then everything would be exactly level between them and there'd have to be a penalty shootout between the two to decide who finished 2nd and 3rd!

Im pretty sure they'd decide it on fair play at that point.

A shootout is ahead of fair play in the equation, but only if the two teams tied are playing each other in the final game. They aren't in the case of the Czechs and Croatia so it'd go to fair play if all was tied on points/H2H/goal diff/goals scored. They wouldn't make both teams travel to a new venue just to take a few penalties in front of no-one.

So tonight Wales would have to win for us to come third, because H2H comes above GD?

I'd have thought Dier could have been rested. He looked under pressure in the Wales game to me and I'd have been tempted to play Forster for Hart as well. Thinking about it I would have played Forster in all games TBH.

Dier was just fine against Wales.
