The Music Thread Strikes Back

The Strawbs.....now I could take or leave them until I saw them live. Excellent. "The Vision of the Lady of the Lake" was performed to a very high standard.
 
Been listening to some early QUEEN albums this week. Sheer Heart Attack is a quite brilliant album. Brighton Rock is magnificent.

I am a big Saw Doctors fan love the music always a sell out when they play around Wolverhampton.
Went to see Robert Plant in Brum recently brilliant, highlite of the year or last few come to think of it Bad Company blew me away, but then Paul Rodgers is god to me.
As christmas is getting nearer Roy Wood at the Robin 2 what a classic rock legend has written so many top tunes.
 
Sheer heart Attack was possibly Queens best Album. I liked the early Queen stuff, but not so keen on the later music.

News of the World - It's late is just a superb song

Queen were fantastic until they released the abortion that was Hot Space, a slight recovery with the Works and A Kind of Magic, and then the Miracle had two good songs. Innuendo has some good stuff on it though.
 
paddy I can't help but wonder if you've been going through my cd collection...

AC/DC, I am not sure anyone is fit to even offer to lace their boots. Gods that they are.

Maiden I loved, up to seventh son. Thing is, with hindsight, I can't help but feel that every album has at least 1 filler track on, perhaps more. But they brought fun to my youth. Some great singles though, & of course, the artwork.

That said, Live After Death is & always will be the marker for live albums (perhaps along with if you want blood....)

Purple, never quite did it for me, yet they had some class tunes, highway star, woman from tokyo, and so on.

Priest, I only hate fucking megadeth more than I hate fucking preist...

The only other live album coming close to live after death, is everything everything by underworld.

From 13 onwards, I was into rock music only. Never grew out of it, but as I got into the late teens, tastes expanded. Music is relative to moods. I couldn't wake up & stick Reign in Blood on to clean my teeth to. itto, when pent up, I ain't going to drop on the orb, as it doesn't match how I feel.

I remember the times when I used to have shock horror faces at people who weren't rockers...didn't they know real music?

How times change...
 
Killers isn't that great an album - Murders in the Rue Morgue and Wrathchild are great, but the rest of it isn't that special
Number of the Beast is filler free for me (Invaders is probably the weakest track but I still like it)
I love every second of Piece of Mind
Ditto Powerslave
Somewhere in Time - I suppose Deja Vu is a bit weak
Seventh Son - I like the album but it does get a bit samey towards the end

Priest are god - tacky and lyrically risible, but I really love a lot of their stuff - Exciter, Free Wheel Burnin', Victim of Changes, Painkiller, Ram it Down, Sinner

How dare you slag the Deth? Their first four albums are magnificent. On top of that A toute le monde is one of my favourite tracks of all time by ANY band. pffft.

Agree about If you want Blood - amazing album. Had AC/DC : Live actually been one concert rather than fading between each track it would also be up there.

Motorhead - No Sleep til Hammersmith and No Sleep at All are great live albums. The newish one Better Head than Dead is also pretty good.

Ozzy / Randy - Tribute is a wonderful live album too, as are Queen Live at Wembley and Live Killers

Reign in Blood is excellent toothbrushing music really.

I listened to News of the World on the train home. It's Late is brilliant, but it's all about the sublime Spread Your Wings. Amazing. IMHO, their good albums are:

Queen II
Sheer Heart Attack
A Night At The Opera
A Day At The Races
News of the World
The Works
A Kind of Magic
Innuendo
Made In Heaven

Some quite magnificent music in amongst all that lot. And I like the ones inbetween as well. With the notable exception of the Flash Gordon soundtrack. Just no, lads. Why did you do that?
 
Has anyone heard of Jonathon Kelly - he appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test many moons ago, and recorded an album entitled, "Twice around the Houses" Absolutely superb.

Iron Maiden is still a good album (better with sanctuary on it!)
Killers, I see what you say, though I love the title track too
NOTB - gangland & invaders are weak for me.
Piece of Mind - everything after the trooper doesn't quite match to be honest
Powerslave - probably a better whole album
Somewhere in Time was experimental in some respects, so I allow for discrepancies there
Seventh son - problem is it becomes too synthy, but on the whole is their most listenable album...

I won't go on, as I dare not get close to blaze bayley era maiden (which, imo doesn't really count anyway...)

You will not change my vitriol regarding Priest or the deth I'm afraid. Cannot ever stand them, sorry.

The AC/DC bonfire box set has the Let there be rock video as a 2 cd concert. I would highly recommend it! Lots of nice extras too.

Motorhead lost me. 3 times I had tickets to see them, & they cancelled every time. I will never buy anything motorhead again. A shame, I was really excited. Problem is, it was IIRC 3 consecutive tours they cancelled on me. Not happy.

Live at the bowl by Queen is also excellent. Early queen is class.

Never forget Slayer supported by Machine Head at the civic. Whatta gig....

Agree with most of this. Most of Maiden up to and including Powerslave is great. Some weaker stuff chucked in but far outweighed by the good stuff. I kind of lost interest after Seventh Son.

And I'm totally with you regarding Megadeth and Priest. Something to do with the whiny vocals, I think. I like my metal with the roar of a lion, not the squeak of a mouse.
 
I have got a couple of big AC/DC box sets but not bonfire - will have to check that out.

Blaze Bayley era maiden is musical excrement. Weird as I saw Wolfsbane supporting Maiden on the inter city express tour and was very impressed.

You want the roar of a lion with your metal then Machine Head is the place to go. Amazing band. I liked Robb Flynn when he was in Vio-lence and Machine Head are just even better. 90,000 at donington screaming 'let freedom ring with the shotgun blast' during davidian was intense.

Machine Heads 1st album and latest album are excellent but they had a seriously dodgy spell at the start of this century. What the fuck was the rap album about???

They have without a doubt, the most entertaining and awesomely talented roadie in the history of metal bands.
Saw them at a festival in Austria(Nova Rock) and their tech came out and soundchecked Robbs guitar with Thunderstruck by AC/DC, cajoling the crowd in between tuning. Then he moved onto the next guitar and started ripping Slayer and Metallica. Then onto bass, where he pulled out Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Primus. The crowd were cheering his every move by now, until he got behind the kit, and lashed into the drumbeat from Slaughtered by Pantera. Finishes with some Machine Head beat, walks off, Machine Head walk on applauding him, crowd goes.....INSANE.

Only time I saw them, but our bass player is a big fan and has seen them about 10 times and says this happens at every show. He is a Super-tech. Good band though.....heavy as fuck

Bonfire boxset is quality!

I always have meant to get their backtracks boxset. As it has to come from america, & you have to buy it in dollars it became very expensive (comparatively) quite quickly. I got into waiting for the exchange rate to change & it never did...
 
I did toy with the idea of going to see reef, but Rides was a poor album, & they never recovered.

I'm going to see athelete on saturday though...
