The Music Thread Strikes Back

The loudest metal gig I went to was Accept at Hammy Odeon in the mid 80s. That actually hurt. Motorhead at the same venue were also brutal.

But I think probably the most consistently stupidly loud band I've seen are My Bloody Valentine. That's just a solid, almost physical, wall of noise for the entire show.

I wish now that I'd had the sense to wear ear plugs during the metal years in the 80s. I have a permanent ringing now.
 
Too many loud concerts have also given me a permanent ringing in my ears. Probably not helped by band practices in a small rehearsal room playing opposite a guitarist who insisted on being twice as loud as the rest of the band.

Wearing ear plugs would have helped but I doubt I would have worn them as a teenager anyway, that would have been far too sensible.

I'm generally too stupid to wear them even now! (Though I did wear them at the last MBV gig.)
 
I've seen MBV twice, both times at a festival, and both times they weren't as loud as people had told me they would be. Probably due to the open air setting.
 
The loudest single noise I've heard at a gig was Mogwai at the Barbican. Can't remember the song but it was after a prolonged period of quiet and I'd kind of drifted off and almost fallen asleep (it'd been a long day and the seats were comfy) - then they came in with this massively loud chord - my wife said I jumped about two feet in the air.
 
Chemical brothers are pretty loud. Leftfield too when I saw them. Spiritualized at the Que club were very loud, but I was sat next to a huge speaker.

Lol'd at SLA's mogwai story. Their gigs are a lot about the contrast with loud/quiet.
 
Anyways, on my week off I've listened a lot to the recent penguin cafe album, and also the public service broadcasting album.

Penguin Cafe is a really nice record. There's a bit of a transition in style, with some longer tunes, a bigger use of strings, blending a lot of folk style with chillout almost.

PSB - the album isn't as instantly gettable as the race for space, or their debut. Took me a few listens to get. Not as good as the other 2 albums (imo), but has some really good tunes (progress, turn no more and they gave me a lamp being particular highlights), and the pit and people will always need coal being key to the albums story. Not sure the album as a whole works as well as the others though, so be interesting to see how they develop their sound.
 
Loudest individual sound I have ever experienced at a gig was at the above Nuclear Assault gig at the Pitz in Milton Keynes. Like I said they had their Hammersmith Odeon rig from the night before and the room was about as big as the Slade Rooms.

Did an ACE stage dive as you do, and bounced off the crowd straight into the bass bins. OWWWWWWWWW. Tinitus for DAYS


Kreator and Obituary are both very loud too, just in case you ever catch them
 
This week, I'm doing a pretty laborious excel task so I thought I'd try and listen to some popular stuff I'd never heard before whilst I work. To Spotify!

Ed Sheeran - purely because everyone slags him off, but I don't know anything he's done and after his GoT cameo, social media went a bit nuts. So I thought I'd listen to his first album.

Thoughts - meh. It's alright, there's nothing offensive about it, I didn't find it appallingly awful, but nothing made me sit up and take notice. So I don't understand why he's got so many detractors. I'm guessing because it's cool to hate him or something. I doubt I'd go back and listen to the rest of his catalogue.

The National - some friends have told me I'd really like them.

Thoughts - better than Ed Sheeran! I listened to their first 2 albums. They're good - but nothing more than that. Again, nothing really grabbed me. I might go back and listen to the rest of their stuff as it might grow on me.

I don't get the Ed hate, he's just bland, really bland. A bit like Coldplay.

Bland is fair. Some witty lyrics on occasions but nothing to write home about (see what I did there?)

I like Coldplay, always have done. Though I don't know their last couple of albums.

Next up to try is Sun Kil Moon. Anyone know them?

I liked Parachutes and Rush of Blood but then I went to see them live. They were as dull as a Theresa May pep talk. The Doves who were on the same bill were excellent in comparison.

They were fantastic when I saw them - and appear to have improved with the light shows etc. I last saw them at Glastonbury in 2005.

Doves (not The Doves - pedant mode...) are fucking awesome. Love them.
 
Sheeran's first album isn't great IMO. Just listen to all his singles.

yep. it's the geezer from the red house painters I think. quite a deep voice. ive got a sun kil moon album, maybe a red house painters as well. don't listen to them much though.
 
Remiss of me not to mention my 2 gigs. James at leic academy were ace. Venue is shit though. Very disappointed with the layout etc. Support were shite.

Elbow at cannock chase were really good. Played a fair selection from their back catalogue. Really enjoyable show, and they really connected with the crowd. A word for Steve Mason, he was absolutely awesome. Really enjoyed his set, and pleasantly surprised that he played dry the rain. I'll definitely be checking out a minimum of one of his albums. He really seemd to be enjoying himself, and seems to have a good rapport with elbow - apparently they invited him specifically for the tour, and they also encouraged the crowd to buy his albums.

A word on forest live - they're really well thought out events imo. I've been to 2 now, at different venues. They choose their locations well, as they tend to be in a bowl, so everyone can see. I will definitely be going to more. Plus, all the profits are re-invested in some really beautiful places. They're great events.

was one of those alligator? might have been their third, but it was the first I got. i'd be surprised if Mr November from alligator doesn't grab anyone, and baby we'll be fine off that album. if that wasn't one you heard worth checking that and Boxer which is a great album too. definitely growers too imo, though I know a few people who "don't get them".

Yes it was - the two albums were The National and Alligator. Mr November was certainly one of the stand outs.
 
Really liking This Is The Kit at the moment.
