The Manager Sacked/Hired Thread 2023/24

Hobbs helping bring in the likes of Mario and Dawson was absolutely crucial to keeping us up last year tbf.

He also (belatedly) seems to have got the current manager right. Feels harsh to say "jury is still out", he might screw up from here but nobody in his job bats a thousand.

I'm not saying Hobbs hasn't done anything right, but I'm also not sure some of the above wasn't down to good fortune. I hope I am wrong, we will see over a larger sample size.

The jury on Hobbs is still out massively, there have been a number of signs that his judgement isn't what some like to make out it is.
Lets not forget that Hobbs has been given a limited, very limited budget to play with.

He has to target "cheap" options. Jeff just put a multi million pound bank breaker inbetween trying to get Beale and getting GON

That's fair; I'd say there's a fair amount of fortune in getting any of this stuff exactly right. It's a people business as much as anything, and, as we know, folk are weird.

There is a lot of fortune involved, the trick is to get more right than wrong over a longer period, hopefully he can do that as I doubt he will be getting much external financial resource.

I think he's done enough good to have some benefit of the doubt. Clear he got a bit lucky with Beale reneging but you can't knock the eventual Plan B.

Sometimes it's just about luck particularly when it's a hunch like Beale or GON. I shan't bore people with the details but there are examples I could give of the NFL team I follow missing out on option a who has proven to be a bust whilst option b or c has proven to be top notch both in coaching and players.

The good outweighs the bad so far so hopefully that continues but there are other factors on the other side of the coin than just the Beale thing where Hobbs is concerned.

Who else were on the shortlist when we appointed Beale? Carsley and ?

Also he is responsible for our appalling January window, where apparently there isn't a striker in the world that we could have signed other than Broja.

He gave us the line in August that we needed more time to find someone suitable, then January comes and we still don't sign anybody.

Now he's better than Sellars and Shi, no doubt. But as said the jury is out.

In addition to the above:

He was one of the main people behind signing Doherty (32) to a 3 year deal too, already not fit for purpose so god knows how that will look when he's still under contract at 35.

I am assuming he was also involved heavily in turning down the 30-35m for Kilman, which is looking like a better decision now but in the Summer not so much. I am higher on Kilman than many on here but given the limitations to his game and the need to generate funds at the time, there wasn't much evidence that turning down that kind of money for him was good judgement of value of a player.

We wanted Rob Edwards back in at least some facility
Yeah the plan was Rob Edwards as a permanent coach, who would stay on regardless of Head Coach and wouldn't be binned when said Head Coach left.

Carsley was the summer wasn't it before GO and I think Lampard applied as well.

After Lop said no it seemed that Beale was our 1st choice straight away....had a few rumblings of Mendes clients and then when Beale said no we basically said "no one good enough for us, we will reassess after the World Cup". Then Lop's came to the rescue a few weeks later.

Lopetegui was before Beale, then the whole dad situation came up

Difficult for Palace, what are they supposed to do? They can't just keep him as manager because he's ill?

I'm amazed they don't include clauses that reduce or nullify the contract being paid in full if they are sacked within the first 6 months.
