Fucking loathe Ferguson. He had everything Pennant, Ricketts and Corica had but for FUCKING YEARS.

That goal against Coventry! Where did that come from?

He did have ability but nowhere near the application he needed to have

Keane to join O Neil at forest. That could be a decent move all round

Well they had a sparking set up with Ireland together. Lovely harmony in the camp where every player got on and not a single one refused to play because of the atmosphere created by Keane.

Forest is a different type of squad though. Keane will be doing most of the training tbf! It has two chances lol

Nothing Roy Keane has done since 2007 suggests he is a good coach.

In fact you could argue that he had his title win with Sunderland due to his connections/budget and just being able to bring in good players for the Championship. Not coaching or tactics.

I actually quite like him as a pundit and adored him as a player but that's as far as it goes.

Oldham set to announce Paul Scholes as their new manager shortly.

Due to his links with Salford the FA have put a rule in place where Oldham cannot buy or sell players to Salford City

Keeps his 10% share of Salford but is no longer a director there.

Slightly off topic but I find it mad how overrated Scholes has become since his retirement.

You what bruv? He was insanely good.

Granted he never did it for England after 2001.

He was very good. I just don't think he was as good as the very top players of that era, it seems since he retired a lot of people think he was on the level of the likes of Xavi, Pirlo, Zidane and he wasn't in that conversation for me.

Xavi and Zidane both said he was their favourite player if I recall correctly?

They did and I think this is where a lot of the overrating of him comes from quotes instead of stats and the eye test.

Not disputing that he was very good he clearly was, I just don't believe he is on the level some people say, and this may just be me not recalling correctly but I definitely don't remember the adulation he gets now being this strong when he was actually playing.

Scholes was magnificent. He's technically the best English player I've ever seen.

He's played off the striker, central in a 4-4-2 and deep in midfield throughout his career and excelled in each position (probably at his peak when deepest) with 200 career goals/assists and a ridiculous array of silverware at club level. The lack of international success for me puts him below Zizou and Xavi, albeit Zidane's success at club level is somewhat limited for a player of that calibre.

The lasting legacy of the Messi/Ronaldo era is going to be people looking at the stats of world class players in their own right andd picking faults on sheer numbers. That's certainly no criticism, as I'm as bad as it as anybody to be honest in this world of fantasy football. If you look back at Figo's career stats, they're not outstanding, but he was an absolutely outrageous talent for over a decade.

but he was dreadful at tackling

It's an interesting debate, it never goes down well when I level any criticism at Scholes. I do think in terms of natural talent he was one of the most gifted. Not things to necessarily beat him with as I know how arbitrary these things can be but I was surprised to see in 14 years of Manchester United career that he never won their player of the year award. Also in terms of assists he's behind some very surprising names like Nobby Solano and Chris Brunt.

Good clip on YouTube of him being interviewed while a couple of lads a far old distance away giving him abuse, tells the interviewer to hang on,while he kicks the ball at the two lads, smacking the one on the head and shutting them up

That's not necessarily surprising, Brunt and Solano were set-piece experts and with Beckham (or Giggs) about, he was never going to have that opportunity. United were very much a traditional 4-4-2 team with Beckham and Giggs delivering from wide and into Yorke/Cole/RVN etc from the end of the 90's til the early 00's. That ties up pretty well with his best numbers in goal terms when he used to arrive late - he was very good in the air for his size.

I do think he went up another level when their style changed in the Ronaldo/Rooney era when he sat much deeper in that Pirlo/Xabi Alonso role. His ability to dictate the tempo of a game was something else.

That's a good point. I guess I found it surprising due to his longevity in the league as a creative/attacking midfield player more than anything.

Although there are some other names I wouldn't have expected to see above him if i'd had to guess, assuming this list is accurate.
