Would be very funny if they went down to L1. They are, arguably, a smaller team than Leeds, Forest and Wednesday and they all took a while to get out of L1.

I think Villa are bigger than all of those and imo are the biggest club to ever drop out the PL.

Possibly bigger than forest and maybe Wednesday, but Leeds are a much bigger club. Historically they are all bigger than Villa, as are wolves probably too.

I suppose this takes us back to the discussion of what constitutes a big club. Newcastle United attract 50,000 fans every home game, but have not won a trophy for ages. Some would say they are one of the biggest clubs in the country.

Sorry can't agree on that at all, Leeds have been out the top flight for 12 years and counting. The majority of their history is based around the don Revie era in late 60's and early 70's.
Villa have won far more than Leeds ever have.
Before the early 60's Leeds were a nothing club.

I have to agree there. Don Revie made Leeds massive. However, one title under Howard Wilkinson aside, they did nothing outside of his era. Villa won the European cup, Leeds didn't.

This whole "big club/small club" thing still bemuses me. You're only as big as your current standing. Everything about the "size" of a club is constantly in flux.

In that case Leicester are the biggest club as we speak. While I like that theory then it seems a bit flawed. I don't think you can go all on history at all. If you did, we would definitely be bigger than Leeds, say, as we have won more silverware. However, Manchester United and Liverpool are still bigger than the Foxes, and probably will always be.

It's not the be all and end all - you certainly can't rest on your laurels about being a "big club", we spent 19 years out of the top flight, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest are getting close to that mark themselves now - but look at the fortunes of Wigan/Fulham since they got relegated, league position is in constant flux, in the grand scheme of things bigger clubs do better in the long run than small clubs. Even though Wigan have played far more seasons of top flight football than Leeds this century, they'll never be as big a club.

Rewind 17 years and Man City played Gillingham in a play off final. Now using your stance of a pure meritocracy they were equals because they both reached the same stage of the same season. It's pretty obvious which one was the bigger club though. Fanbase, history etc does definitely play a part when it comes to players and managers deciding whether or not to join a club as well, as well as big clubs invariably having better facilities.

It's an interesting perspective you come from Alan, the best way to describe it is the esteem that Americans hold clubs like the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs. Essentially all 3 have been poor for the last few seasons but they'll always be bigger clubs than the Royals (current champs), Rays and D-Backs.

To clarify, I'd say the "size" of a club would depend on their most recent ten years. Of course, losing ground as a club is much easier than gaining it.

Unfortunately, as with so many things, the amount of money a club can spend will have a great impact on this.

Not sure thats entirely true - Forest, Leeds and ourselves are bigger than Bournemouth & Palace despite the current league positions - they will need to win a couple of trophies to challenge that

Apparently Garde is getting the bullet today. Brian Little and Sid Cowans to hold the fort until Nigel Pearson takes over in the summer?

I don't know what they expected of Garde, I said at the top of the season that Villa were dogshit and for once in my life I've been proved right. Losing players like Vlaar and Benteke from a shit-to-average team and replacing them with Championship mediocrity and Agent Lescott was always a recipe for disaster. They've been lucky for at least three of the last five seasons and that luck was going to run out some time, for fuck's sake they bought nobody in January.

I have mixed feelings about them. On the one hand you have players like Richards, Lescott, Gueye, and Veretout, who aren't bad players at all. On the other hand you've got players like Hutton, Agbonlahor, Clark, every LB not named Amavi, Ayew, and Gestede who are mediocre or appalling. And Guzan has had a nightmare of a season. That goal against Swansea was atrocious keeping.

But looking at their squad I wouldn't have guessed they'd not only be in the bottom 5 but totally adrift at the bottom.

I've seen Hutton play for four different teams at Molineux and every time he's been the worst player on the pitch by a mile. Shocking footballer.

Gestede is an absolute camel as well. £7m they paid for him.

Levein picking Hutton for Scotland used to drive me batshit insane. He is dreadful at almost everything. Especially when there were better (if still not great) options like Bardsley and Whittaker kicking about.
