They sacked Lambert less than a year ago for (amongst other things) having one of his primary styles being sterile possession in meaningless areas which produced awful football for very little reward. So obviously it makes sense that they would later in the year go for the king of sterile possession, a man who makes Hoddle look like Diego Simeone in comparison.
