The Live Match Discussion Thread: 2019/2020

I think Tierney is a really decent player. Great signing for them. But Pepe at £72m just looks like insanity.

And as for Luiz... bombscare at Chelsea and then you port him into a much weaker defence. The fact that Merson wants him as captain says a lot more about the fact that Merson has rediscovered the bottle than about the defensive capabilities of David Luiz.

Arsenal need to find a sensible system that allows them to properly exploit the talents of Aubemayang and Lacazette. Emery has no clue what system that might be. And that is why he should be fired.

A sort of 3-4-1-2 would be the best for them. But there are too many gaps and no cover if something goes wrong to the few who are ok:

------------------------Leno*------------------------

---------Holding-------New CH------New CH--------

Bellerin------Guendouzi/Torreira***---New CM------Tierney

------------------------Özil-------------------------------

----------------Laca---------Auba-------------------------

*I don't really like him, never have but you can't change absolutely everything overnight
** You can only realistically play one of them, alternating alongside a proper partner would be ok, Ceballos is probably not that man as it stands

So at least three high profile signings, then you need everyone to stay fit all the time because nearly everyone outwith kids (Nelson, Saka, Willock, Smith-Rowe, Martinelli - could all go either way) that I haven't included there (AMN, Kolasinac, Sokratis, Luiz, Xhaka, Mustafi, Chambers, Martinez etc) aren't good enough for a club like Arsenal, it also means that there's no room in the starting XI for Pepe so that looks a colossally stupid move.

I think you sum it up pretty well. Why buy Pepe? Why buy both of Guendouzi and Torreira? Both are decent players, but together it totally messes the team up.

Ozil is their biggest talent outside the front two but it just isn't working for him there. And their defence is shocking.

Crazy how open the league is this year in midtable as a result of the success of the top 4 and the failings of the bottom 3. 4 points separating 5th and 16th after 1/3 of the season. A win and you can jump like 10 places.

Tbf Guen was a cheap punt from Ligue 2. I don't think anyone expected him to be a proper first teamer for some time (would be analogous to Kilman playing most of our games on merit for the last 18 months, I suppose) so it's fine to have both as options...but at the moment they can ONLY really play those two as the other options don't seem to be up to it in the slightest. Ceballos is talented but seems to have the heart of a pea. Xhaka probably won't play for them again. The rest are kids or you're shoehorning someone like Luiz or Chambers in there which is a sticking plaster (and at a time when you don't have proper defenders anyway).

The club has been so badly managed for ages. You're letting people like Ramsey, van Persie, Giroud, Szczesny, Sanchez (yes I know he turned to shit) go for well below their value or even nothing because you don't manage contracts properly. You have to know when to let a player go and maximise that value, cynical as it is, they're assets. But then they get it wrong at the other end of the scale - Monreal and Koscielny are both old now and not the players they were, but they had some good games last year, they'd have been alright for another year. No, mess around, sell them and you get a whole £5m or so for them. Big wow, wouldn't buy you a Championship centre half these days. Monreal was right at the end of the window too, he played for them THIS season! Just keep him for what it's worth, he didn't even want to leave. You're telling me he's a worse defender than Sokratis or Mustafi? Because it didn't look like it last year.

This is the issue with having a totally hands off owner. Haven't they had three different DoFs in the last five years or so? No wonder recruitment is totally messed up.

Guendouzi and Torrreira are both good players, shame that they don’t seem to work well together. Guendouzi should be a proper bargain, assuming arsenal don’t ruin him.

Fact of the day: Emery has one fewer point in his first 50 games than Wenger managed in his final 50 games (when they "definitely couldn't go on like this")

Scored less goals than Burnley, and conceded more than Bournemouth.

Good to see a few FA Cup shocks today...

Dover beat Southend, Maldon & Tiptree beat Orient away, Kingstonian win at Macclesfield while Bromley draw at Brizzle Rovers

Looked like blatant handball by TAA ignored just before that Fabinho goal. Saying that Aguero had the ball at his feet and stopped waiting for a penalty that never came.

2-0 already blimey. Looked close to being off but very quickly 'checked'. Hmmm.

Salah looked offside too. Where was the 3-minute long messing-with-lines-and-armpits check? Reminiscent of Sigurdsson vs us - cleared really quickly despite looking off.

Absolute stonker from Fabinho, but clear handball from TAA before it. Would have been a riot if overturned though...

And agree with Noodle, Salah looked off but cleared very quickly.
