The Live Match Discussion Thread: 2019/2020

I just can’t believe people have been forced against their will to watch the football and weren’t allowed to change the channel.

Aside from not adding enough time on at the end what did she get wrong then?
She got a foot on the ball and didn't go through her beforehand or afterwards in a different motion so wasn't a penalty. Can see how you'd give in normal time but not once you get to see it again. The enough time wasn't 30 seconds or so it was about 4 minutes.

I don't blame her for the VAR for the penalty retake, but if that's the rules now then you may as well give a penalty goal as a keeper will rarely save one as they can't move before the kick which takes us back to where we were a decade or so but now VAR will pull every one back.

I think it’s a pretty clear penalty to be honest.

One the retake. I largely agree although it’s always been a bugbear of mine that GK’s go unpunished for stepping off the line early. Now they can actually stop it happening. Same as players entering the area

I haven’t watched a minute of it. I did want to read some reaction to our draw in European competition which might as well have been hidden behind a sign saying “beware of the leopard”*

*old hitchhikers guide reference, cool kids

First world problems.... (and can’t say I get the reference! But then I am most certainly not cool ha!)

Women's football is dreadful I'm afraid.

Absolutely no issue with it existing but it isn't even pub standard. It shouldn't be televised at all. It's the equivalent of watching me and Kenny have a game of snooker and sticking it on BBC One.
If you take that view though then it applies to pretty much any female support including Athletics. Saying you are female so you're not worthy of national exposure isn't a good message particularly when it's shown on a publically funded network. The England games are getting 6m+ viewers which is more than any other channel at the same time and more than the BBC would get in a typical slot.

I just get pissed off at scrolling through the ridiculous number of stories about it on the bbc website in order to find one story on real football. It’s fucking shite.
Agreed it's painful. I've got no problem with it being televised, but it should be kept to a separate section on the BBC website.

This.

You don’t have to support the women’s game if you don’t want to, and there are many fair criticisms but don’t try to halt the progress by saying it shouldn’t be televised. Men have been doing that for long enough

I haven’t said that. My criticism is the website coverage. And Bear has explained the solution

I watched France against Nigeria the other day at the football from the French team was excellent, they couldn't finish for shit but they were cutting through Nigeria at will. It's the only bit of the competition I've watched though so don't know about the general standard but that was light-years ahead of the last women's football I'd watched.

This is what the Argentinian penalty was retaken for. Small forward momentum just as the ball was kicked. I get why the the rule had been introduced but the rigid implementation is bollocks. If it's not obvious enough for a ref or assistant to see in real time then it shouldn't be reviewed.

Their feet are literally on the line. Surely that’s not illegal? Henderson last night was probably a good 2 yards off and no issue.

Plus, I don’t know why they are trying to introduce a rule to fix an issue which isn’t there? The majority of penalties are still scored, despite gamesmanship, keeper moving etc. And when most penalties are given for non clear goal scoring opportunities (innocuous hand ball, trips/pushes going away from goal, booting it out of play and initiating contact) why should it be made basically a free goal?

She's a few cm's off the line, but only moves a small moment before the ball was kicked. It's a rule that is ok, because you know what the intention is, once VAR gets involved though it becomes a farce. 81% of penalties were scored in the PL last season, I bet it goes north of 90% next year with most of the remaining 10% missing the target. Penalty shoot outs will go on all night as even those saved will be reviewed and many retaken. It'll be interpreted differently by Xmas would be my bet

Yeah that's clearly overly officious bollocks.

I think the first half of the season will be a farce full stop. There will be penalties everywhere for nothing challenges, deceiving the referee will actually get worse if it’s not stamped out, the games will be over 2 hours long, clear offsides will be ignored only to be flagged 30 seconds later when the phase of play stops.

I’m not against VAR in general but it’s current use is terrible

I'd imagine the defending team will be looking for fouls everywhere in their own third, throwing themselves about at the smallest contact, just in case a goal goes in, and there's a chance of it being overturned.

Nope. I'll happily watch womens' tennis (although there are too many bagels), athletics, golf and female drivers in motorsport are more than welcome (you wouldn't know either way, would you). The rugby is actually very decent too.

The football and cricket variants are a fucking joke. Just awful. It's embarrassingly poor. Don't insult people's intelligence by pretending this is actually real, it's a fucking charade. I'd genuinely see a better standard over the park. It's not about cutting them off because they're female. It's about it being bloody awful. I'm not even having a laugh here, I'm 38, I've got one knee, my ankle is ruined, I'm carrying a wee bit of timber, at best I could have made 6th/7th tier in my absolute prime (I played semi-pro in Germany) and I'd still be one of the best players in the tournament here. Broken by the end as my body does not match my spirit, but still. And in the grand scheme of things, I wasn't that good at my best. I'm now an old man in football terms who has lost the ability to move properly. And still, I'm telling you. I'd boss it. I can play, these people can't. They're weak, they're slow and seem to have no idea what they're doing.

Give me a call when they find some footballers, eh.
