The Live Match Discussion Thread: 2019/2020

Depends on how you benchmark greatness.

They are likely to get the highest or next to highest top league points total in history, that would suggest they are one of the best ever.

The eye test says they are not.

It wouldn't hurt for us to treat our guest from Everton with a tad more decorum. This is a thread where we talk about other teams so no issue at all with talking about Liverpool. If anyone waded into discussions on the Wolves sub forum about other teams, fine - but that's not the case here.

Play nicely please!

I'm quite happy for members here to say Everton in recent seasons have been gash, because we have. 72 points under Martinez has been the high point, and Moyes getting us into the Champions League stages is all that we can claim in recent decades.

All I was saying, and that can be read in my previous posts, is that the Red Side, in terms of current achievements cannot compare to those others I have mentioned (and I should have included the recent Man City team also).

I don't hold with all the lovey-dovey towards Spurs either, who although playing some very good football, have surfaced with absolutely nothing. One can say with justification that Portsmouth and Wigan have won more than us and Spurs in recent times! Such is this 'funny old game', as Greavie once said.

And on a more general note, given the ongoing concerns with the virus, we might not see this season end until the middle of summer, or later.

Okay. I will give you my thoughts on your dear friends from across the park!

They are an all-encompassing winning machine. The points harvest is staggering. But are they a glorious watch? I would argue not. Peak Wenger era Arsenal were a beautiful watch, as were a couple of the Fergie United sides. It’s impossible to deny the ruthless efficiency of Klopps Liverpool, but I can definitely attack their lack of aesthetic beauty.

Spurs and Mourinho is a marriage made in hell. He is a chequebook manager and Levy is notoriously tight fisted. They are pragmatic and defensive and they can also be incredibly cynical, as Adama Traore can testify. I hope whenever this season finally done we are comfortably looking down on them.

Might as well chuck my thoughts about Everton in too as we are chatting!

You made a spectacular choice of manager. Quite how Don Carlo chose to go to Goodison when the Arsenal job was available still surprises me but you have to embrace your good fortune there and make the most of it.

You have some decent to very good players. Richarlison is bloody excellent although you did probably over pay. His goals are vital as Moise has settled with you about as well as Patrick Cutrone did here. But there are some terrible weaknesses. You got robbed paying out for Yery Mina and I am sorry but Jordan Pickford is an absolute bomb scare. Upgrading your keeper and centre backs should be the priority in the next window.

Thank you.

Everton definitely have been gash for a while. Stick around though, enjoy reading your posts.

I have always quite liked Everton. They have had some of my favourite keepers as I grew up in George Wood and in my twenties onwards Big Neville! Was gutted for them to win the cup winners cup then get banned from Europe following heysel. And they gave us Derek Mount field. They also don't whinge moan and give the same entitled wines as the red half of the city.

Not keen on Pickford as a keeper or Richarlison as a personality. Apart from that no issues.

Enjoyed Liverpool last season but they aint on a par with that team this season.
Given a season and i reckon Ancelotti will have Everton properly sorted out.
Have an Everton fan at our work (50+) and no shit, hes still ranckled at not being allowed into Europe back then (wont say what he actually said)

The Howard Kendall (as manager first time round) Everton side was really, REALLY good. Southall, Van Den Hauwe, Mountfield, Ratcliffe, Sheedy, Sharpe, Heath, Bailey, Harper, Steven, Gray, Reid, Stevens, Bracewell, Richardson.

Great side.

The Liverpool side was quite nifty then, as well. Bruce in goal, Hansen & Lawrenson central defence. Rush & Dalgleish up front. Used to see some tasy derbies back then. Rush was the coolest goal-scoring machine I had seen since Jimmy Greaves. Never seemed to show any nerves - just brilliant control and deadly finishing. Scared the crap out of me every time we played them.

There is cautious optimism that Ancelotti will begin to turn things around in the summer. But he has to unload the deadwood, and get the signing right in key positions.

What Wolves did was brilliant. Brought in a Manager who no one knew about. Brought in players that other clubs had basically ignored. Got up to the top flight, and all have flourished superbly. A pleasure to watch this Wolves team (and I'm not just saying that because I'm on this forum). Leicester, on the other hand, appear to be a one-trick pony now - without Vardy their goal-scoring dries up somewhat. They will be less of a threat once Maddision goes as well, as I rate him highly.

As for Spurs, I agree with you: Mourinho & Levy look like the marriage of Hitler and Stalin to me. That will end in tears, I think.

The imponderable is Man City. Big gaffe in not strengthening their defence past summer. Are they on the downward trend now? Jeez, at their place a few weeks ago, they were hanging on for grim death in the last 10 minutes against us! They should have really dismantled our present team good-style!

Rush was pretty amazing. You would have no need to see us in the late eighties as we would have been rightfully below your notice but a certain Steve Bull was just as deadly.

Maddison would be the ideal replacement for David Silva, he'll be a top player.

Loved watching Rush but watching Bully was so much better.

Thanks.

Only been to Molyneux once. 1966. FA Cup 6th Round second replay against Man City. Left school at 4 in my school uniform. Into Liverpool city centre on the bus. Football special train out of Liverpool Lime Street. In the Everton end terracing at Molyneux to see us win 2-0 (Pickering & Temple). Got back home about 3 in the morning via return train and taxi from the station. Got my mum to pay the taxi fare. Mad times as a 15 year-old!

Bull reminded me of Le Tissier later. I think both never got the full credit they deserved. Both excellent.

I think we will see BIG bids going in for that lad in the summer.

A product of Norwich City, and I think Cantwell from there wil improve into a very good top flight player as well. Whatever happens to Norwich in this now strange season, I think bigger clubs will be after him in the summer.

Thanks.

My earliest memories of Everton are pretty decent, I really loved watching them in the days of Sheedy, Mountfield, Stevens, Reid and Sharp. To be honest I think Sharp was my favourite forward for a couple of years.

Ancelotti is the absolute bloody best appointment Everton could have dreamed of making. He can give you a superb side if the money is there from Moshiri but I worry you are going to bust the budget on the new stadium project. Let's face it, Goodison needs more than a facelift, but burning half a billion there might not be the best idea if there is a reduction in the cash for your manager to strengthen, especially when the Sky Six are weaker and there are teams like ourselves, Leicester and even maybe Sheffield United breaking in.

Thanks for your comments. Don't forget Nuno did pretty damn well in other jobs. He is a quality manager, with his one area to be challenged maybe being delivering too many draws that should be wins. I don't care though - I fucking love him. We have brought some amazing players into English football - Neves and Jota are Gods. and Rui is a superb keeper. But the one to watch in future is going to be Pedro Neto I think.

Leicester, on the other hand, appear to be a one-trick pony now - without Vardy their goal-scoring dries up somewhat. They will be less of a threat once Maddision goes as well, as I rate him highly. Brentdan has work to do for sure. We should have doubled them this year, but...VAR :icon_rolleyes: . Vardy is a lethal finisher, but their xG ratings tell you they are massively over-performing.

As for Spurs, I agree with you: Mourinho & Levy look like the marriage of Hitler and Stalin to me. That will end in tears, I think. OOOOH - I do hope so

Pfft - cheers for the six points Pep.

A few thoughts on your post above.

Not too sure on Cantwell, he's only got a year on Maddison and he's not even close yet. Maddison's all round game is top notch but Cantwell still seems to be a lightweight showpony who disappears too often. I personally can't see him above lower to mid table at best but I'm often proven to be talking bollocks.
