I'm not sure why we're even trying to hedge our bets with a loan+option move. If we think he's good enough then just buy him.

This is a probable explanation rather than a defence, but we'd be buying him at the top of his market, presumably given the fee on heavy wages with more than a decent chance of going down. The loan+option is cleaner if/when that does happen
