The January 2025 Transfer Thread

The bigger shock to me is we gave Bentley a longer contract instead of taking Arsenal's money.
Three things at play there really:

1) We didn't really extend Bentley's deal, we activated a clause that was already there from the day he signed and was always going to be taken up unless he was a knobhead

2) The money Arsenal were offering wasn't worth it, not when we're horribly short on HG players (stupid rule)

3) None of us ever want him to be playing any games in any competition but that spare keeper role is a very important one these days if the guy you've got is happy to do it and fits well with the group. Loads of teams now have an experienced keeper who will barely if ever get on the pitch but does all the crap in training that you don't necessarily want the #1 or #2 doing, and also won't moan if he's not getting a game. Look at Newcastle signing Ruddy. Of course this does beg the question what Tom King brings to the party.

I think Bentz was meant to be 2nd choice but it went tits up when the Sa move failed.

King was meant to be the 3rd choice

We wouldn’t pay for Ramsdale yet within 5 months we’ve to all and intents and purposes lost £10m on Johnstone as he has the resale value of a used cracker. Ramsdale on the other hand would have had a decent resale price and would have improved the team.

Too much baggage with Ramsdale for me (and he's prone to Sa-style howlers too often too)
Reality is we should have been able to find better than Sa for somewhere between what we paid for SJ and what Ramsdale would have cost and they would almost certainly have some resale value. A classic example of buy cheap, buy twice, not that £10m for SJ was cheap, just cheaper than alternatives.

We definitely had some form of interest in Michael Cooper who only cost Sheff Utd £2m and is having a worldie of a season. We do some odd things.

Ignoring the merits of Ramsdale the individual, prior to add ons he cost £8m more than Johnstone, not the amount the club were leaking beforehand. For that amount they should have signed him if that's who they wanted. In relative terms it's penny pinching

Has he set the world on fire this season?
I genuinely think he's no better than what we have.

You’re entitled to this opinion obv, but I have to say that whatever stick Ramsdale gets seems undeserved based just on his time at Arsenal. Didn’t see much of him before that but IMO he’s largely been fantastic at Arsenal and they really overthought things by bringing in Raya.

I'd probably compare him to Sa, makes a world now and again but lacks concentration and prone to a lot of errors.

He was absolutely dreadful for Sheff Utd

Aye, I know the reputation and have no reason to doubt it. Don’t think he’s lived down to that rep at Arsenal, admitting that I didn’t see how shit he actually was.

Definitely remember a bit of shock when Arsenal bought him.

Burger King is still Burger King in Germany too. Not Burgerkönig. Used to disproportionately annoy me.

In a similar vein, I don't get the mixed up name of Bayern Munich as referred in the UK. Surely it should be Bayern München and Bavaria Munich if we want to translate.

Mind you, our lot are translated by some people I know as Die Wölfe in German, Os Lobos in Portuguese, Los Lobos in Spanish and Les Loups in French. They all know The Wolves and our logo though!
