The January 2025 Transfer Thread

I remember when he arrived at Liverpool Football Focus trailed the section about him as being about a man who fought guerillas. I was expecting to see him wrestling gorillas 🦍 so was most disappointed.
Remember as a kid hearing on the news about armed guerilla warfare and imagined it being gorillas with machine guns, kind of like Planet Of The Apes

For God's sake.

Right, so that's who? Danny Ings? I think I'll pass thanks.

We've also outscored everyone in the bottom half bar Brentford (11th) and Spurs (what are they doing down here) and it isn't particularly close either. 3 teams on 28 are the next closest and we have 34. We've scored the same as Villa who are 8th.

Recency bias isn’t it as JSL has hit a barren run.

Atleast his initial aren’t JLS as you’d then only expect him to get one shot…

For the avoidance of doubt I wouldn't mind us signing another striker. Because we only have one if Sasa isn't anywhere near fit. Guedes, Hwang and Cunha aren't strikers although you can put them there.

It's this stupid pretence that there's a supermarket-style aisle we could stroll down and just pick up "Premier League experienced, handy goalscorer, will happily sign for the team in 17th who have been shite for an entire year and also their club will happily let them go". We used to get it with people saying we needed an "Ince-type midfielder". No shit, can I have a "Paolo Maldini-type centre half" while I'm at it?

And the fact that as a team we haven't struggled to score for absolutely ages now. In fact we must be very near the top in terms of scoring in every game if you look back over the last 18 months.

You can't stand Guedes, don't rate Hwang, Sasa is unlikely now to be registered and our only CF is injured, it's a hole.

Yes, as I say, I don't mind if we sign one.

If you can list me three realistic "experienced finishers on the fringes at another Premier League club" who would actually be a good idea then I'll be very impressed.

Also I'd be surprised if Strand Larsen misses more than the next two league games.

Oh the PL bit is hokey, but the need isn't. Comes down to squad balancing again and the ridiculous preoccupation with Hwang

I thought we’d bring a forward in and I’m surprised we didn’t send Forbs back to facilitate doing so. The fact we haven’t suggests JSL hasn’t got a serious injury. I’d imagine Forbs won’t feature unless we get a couple of injuries as it would be madness to trigger the must-buy clause based on what he’s done so far.

The striker issue though is potentially impacted because we have one striker already who we aren't actually paying for till next year, and then potentially Forbs depending on what his criteria is to trigger that.

I fully expect Cunha to be off in the summer so would hope their is a more serious recruit of attacking players then.

Think we all know deep down that we’re not getting rid of Guedes or Hwang any time soon, so they’ll be our ‘back up’ forwards to JSL. And as per above, Cunha can play up top if we really need him to. So that’ll be their view on the squad from the likes of Hobbs etc - they’ll think we have enough firepower there. Then in the summer we’ve got Sasa back for another body in that area. Cunha will obviously go, but you’d like to think we’ll already be working out a viable replacement for him.

That’s not me saying Guedes, Hwang etc are viable options (I don’t mind the 2024/25 version of Guedes, but we know he’s inconsistent, even if the efforts there), but it’s just where we are.

“It feels amazing (to sign). I’ve always wanted to play for a big club in the Premier League and Tottenham Hotspur is exactly that… I think as soon as you hear Tottenham Hotspur is interested, the only thing you can do is say yes," he beamed in his first interview as a Spurs player.

So have we put in the infamous deal sheets, or ballsed up the transfers? Neither would shock me with Wolves
