The January 2024 "Will we actually sign a striker or just Che Adams/Kieffer Moore" Transfer Thread

We're always waiting for better though aren't we? They said exactly that in the summer.

As Del said its really disappointing if the sum of our amazing scouting network is Broja, Adams and Ings (if that does turn out to be the case) Barry from Gornal could have suggested those 3.

I'd bet good money that they've scouted a lot more than these.

It's January - clubs are reluctant to let players go, there's very little business being done. And it's not the same situation we found ourselves in this time last year. We're not going to be in deep relegation trouble unless we improve the squad dramatically.

Yeah so would I, but the optics don't suggest that.

I'm sure they said in the summer that it was difficult to get a striker over the line it is a tough window etc...and they'll say the same again.

In fact that's been said a number of times, Moxey loved it.

Our expectations are continually dampened.

However there is a week or so left, so let's see.

But I don't see the point of getting worked up about getting a striker in when it's really not THAT essential? It would be nice, but I'd much rather wait for a window that will see more opportunities to get the right player (and character) in.

I think it's a very different situation to the last window. And we'll see about the next window when the time comes.

It's nice to be relaxed about the lack of transfer activity during a window for a change TBH!

They said that in the summer though, that's my point! Where does it end?

I think you only will see how essential it was with hindsight. Finish where we are now with a clean injury record and it wasn't. Lose a couple of forward players and miss Europe by a point or 2 and it was. The former being more likely. Similar situation with the extra centre half

It's hard to argue it's not needed when the club have tried and failed for two windows to get one, and we've got a grand total of 4 attackers for 3 spots, and playing as the 9 is the best use of none of them. Yeah, we won't go down, but so what? Stop giving a shit? Or we could actually spend a bit of money on a proper striker, and give him the next 4 months of 'dead season' to settle in to the team before looking to a Summer of optimism?

It's hard to sign players in the winter, people don't let good players go. Don't be unreasonable with your expectations.
It's hard to sign players in pre-season, no business is done then. Don't be unreasonable with your expectations.
It's hard to sign players towards early August, players like to see what other business is done. Don't be unreasonable with your expectations.
It's hard to sign players in the last week of August, clubs might not have a replacement lined up. Don't be unreasonable with your expectations.

It's amazing anybody moves, any time, it really is

I should have clarified, I'd only sign Broja on loan, but all the talk is a permanent deal, and the figures quoted are ridiculous.
I would want an Option not Obligation to buy. At say £25M
He obviously has/had something about him.

Every transfer is a risk, it may work for him here, it may not but, Frazer would be better off starting in the Championship, than getting 15 mins every 3 or 4 games for us

It really isn’t just us this window though, there’s barely been any signings at all.

True.

I guess there's been an element of owners shitting their pants about FFP.

But that should also mean clubs are willing to sell so they don't fall foul of it - in Chelsea's case I guess that's why they're hawking Broja as he'll represent an excellent profit as a youth player.

That’s Chelsea’s whole model, they have a conveyor belt of academy players they keep selling that makes pure profit and then they can spread the cost of incomings over long contracts.

Seems a bit backwards to me that the rules encourage teams to sell their home grown academy players over foreign imports

Plus they want to get it done before everyone realises that he's shite.

I think that might be too late.

I was surprised by those Soton goals though, a number of them are excellent it's not as though he was scoring 5 yard tap ins Seyi style. I wonder where that player went, he must be a huge confidence player.

I think you are going to see more of it, not to make profit just redistribute it to meet the regulations. Not like for like players, but City selling Palmer to cover Nunes and plenty of others from an FFP perspective being an example. Chelsea may well sell Gallagher in the Summer which wouldn't be for football reasons from their perspective.

You rewind even a couple of months ago and our lot on Twitter had him pegged as #1 target. That's dropped off a bit since his showing on Christmas Eve which was one of the worst showings from an opposition player I've seen for a while.

Yeah it makes sense to do it but it just seems the wrong message to be sending.
