The "Grow Your Own" Thread

If you peg the trails in the ground they will take root and form another plant

Thanks. Well we have a raised bed like 2m x 2m and it's full of them. What I mean is we had the fruits off probably 2 months ago but the roots and leaves seem to have grown and grown since. Thought they would die off a bit by now

Corgettes are baby marrows, or so the story goes.

Cucumbers are similar plants but completely different

I've never tasted raw courgette. I just assumed they were the same because they look so similar.

I'd encourage avoiding the "they all look the same to me" argument...

Many berries look exceptionally similar, yet some are poisonous.

I think courgettes and cucumbers are from the same "family". I'm not 100% though, and it isn't always obvious. Look at the arguments people have over tomatoes!

Slice them into ribbons with a little salt and a drizzle of olive oil

Even better - dry griddle them and then marinate in olive oil, salt+pepper, red wine vinegar, mint and a touch of garlic. Great in 30 minutes or so, unbelievably good if you do the night beforehand.

Works an absolute treat with aubergines and peppers too.

Tomatoes are going red. The joy!
\leeks are ripening. Perfect timing, as stews can be made now the weather is changing.
our sweetcorn turned out really well. darlo, wondering if you harvested yours too early?
peppers will be started getting eaten this week, as they're starting to look ready.
The cucumbers this year are the best ever!

Took down the raspberry canes, as they were in the way. Chopped down the sole sunflower and saved the heads for seeds for next year (hoping nothing happens to them like last year).
Planning on splitting some lilies into new pots over the weekend. That and pruning some hedges. Gotta get the moss out of the lawn too.

Edit - basil and thyme still going great guns. and loving fresh apples off the tree.

Harvested (& eaten) some of the tomatoes - pumpkin is now approx 23 ins circumferance

God knows what I am going to do with all the chillies I have now as well

Well we potted some tomatoes and peppers over a month ago and put them into the greenhouse... Absolutely nothing showing in the 144 seed tray compartments. Pretty disappointed as we had a fantastic harvest last year

I haven't sown anything yet mate, as my instinct is it is too cold. The soil needs to warm up. Debating whether to start this weekend, or next.

Well we have plenty more seeds so can restart.
We've finished the front garden though... after putting in the 2nd extra bit of drive, we've completely gravelled the front and incorporated 9 raised beds. We separated the rhubarb and raspberries into 2 beds and have, today, finished the planting...

fair play mate! I can't wait to be able to get into the garden. just did some basic tidying up and sweeping the other weekend, and chopping up some branches too. felt great to be able to get/spend time outdoors.

Got seed potatoes chiting up in the shed & going to plant out seeds for onions & carrots soon (needs to warm up a little more) & should really sort out a greenhouse of some kind to start them off in a kinder environment.

Hopefully my neighbour opposite offers a couple of tomato plants and the chilli's (which did really well last year) as he does have a greenhouse!

There will still be some space so will try something else as well.

My first crop early grows are planted already, three lots and I’ve had the first leaves break the surface and covered them

noticed that a couple of things in the greenhouse have started sprouting. In spite of the weather forecast, decided yesterday to sow some seeds, as otherwise it'll be put off too much.

So in went some chives, leeks, spring onions, lettuce, radish watermelon, and some old french beans. Hopefully the greenhouse will keep them safe from the plunging temperatures, and we'll see something happen in a week or 2.

the balloon plants I sowed last year have all sprouted, which feels like an achievement!

mrs jelly also planted strawberries in a stawberry planter for our first attempt at those. They should compliment the blueberries, raspberries and blackcurrant plants we have, all of which have leaves or buds on.

I also weeded the veg patch in preparation.

I now have a schedule for planting/sowing that means I'll have a pretty busy april/may, so lets hope the weather improves!

We've got rid of our vegetable garden, had it for over 10 years and enjoyed the growing stuff to eat thing. We got a bit bored with it last few years so have dug it up and in the process of turning it into a ' mini orchard'. Currently have a redcurrant bush and dwarf cherry tree and just planted a dwarf apple tree, surrounded by wild/meadow flowers. Will see how it goes over the next couple of years and take it from there.

sowed some basil today.
also sowed some sweet william seeds, and some marigolds for some colour. collected some fuscia seeds from the plants we have, but I am not expecting anything to sprout from them as they didn't look in good nick.
hoping that the frosts end after the beginning of this week, as I want to get the pots out of the greenhouse and really get started with some sowing!

butter beans and first lot of sunflowers are sown.
weather looking like tonight might be the last frost. Hope so - need the space in the greenhouse!

lovely day today, so more sowing of seeds.
chives and lettuce ad radish watermelon (again)
more sunflowers
more sweet williams
sorted out a load of pots and trays to do more in the week.

I like the idea of growing some veggies with the kids but to be honest I can't really be bothered with the maintenance that would be required in the garden to begin with to sort out the soil to grow them in (my soil and my grass is appalling, plus I hate gardening).

Which vegetables would be good to just grow in pots on our patio?
