The "Grow Your Own" Thread

We have a donkey sanctuary up the road that used to give their manure away. Someone recommended that they sell it and the place makes a bomb, these days.

I thought our beans weren't growing right, so decided to rip them out yesterday. Found a lot of small beans on, so harvested them and going to eat them this evening (have a lemon chicken in the slow cooker to have with them).
Our basil and thyme are going great. We've dried out bits of both, but also repeatedly eat fresh basil in salads, or pasta dishes.
The tomato plants are covered with flowers and small tomatoes. I can't wait for them to start reddening.
The pepper plants have numerous flowers. There are a couple of small peppers appearing, and one big one!
The 3 surviving parsnips are doing well in the ground. Christmas dinner there!
The leeks have really come on the past month. They'll be ready to start eating in 3-4 weeks I hope.
We've virtually finished the peas. In the next couple of days I'll take the canes down and finish off the last few pods.
The sprouts are growing well. Having to hunt caterpillars and throw them over the fence all the time to protect them. 30 or so decent looking plants.
The sweetcorn seem to have pollinated, meaning we will potentially have homegrown corn on the cob! Excited to see how they turn out.
The cucumbers are thirsty devils, but looking really optimistic for a crop this year! Expect to start eating the first one this week.
The raspberries are now pretty much done. There are a few stragglers, but we tend to just eat them as we see them. The blackcurrants were all done 6 weeks ago, and I need to prune the plant. The last few blueberries are ripening this month. Probably be all done in another week.
The apple tree is as full as I have ever seen it, and they are lovely!
We've started going over the local park picking blackberries, as owing to lockdown the blackberry bushes have grown strong!
We have pruned the lavender, and collected the flower heads for pot pourri/moth prevention.
We're also collecting seed pods - poppies especially, and I identified seed pods on fuscias, so we want to collect these and try growing fuscias from seed. The balloon plant seeds I sowed this year are just about growing, and may flower in a few weeks we hope.
We've sown pampas grass seeds, and planted it out in the hope it will grow and hide some of the composting area.
Our single rogue sunflower has come out strong!

One thing I love is fresh tomatoes off the vine. I buy them regularly.

I also picked some blackberries the other day. There is a long row of bushes right along the river behind my house so it's only a 2 min walk to get them. Seen a few people stop picking them too.

I'm also looking forward to try cooking something with the tomatoes I hope to have. Fingers crossed there is a good crop incoming.

Forgot to mention that I found some photos of the garden last year on my phone, and the bulbs/flowers have really come on in a year! I was looking the other day and thinking of getting some more tubs and splitting some of the bulbs up.

Alright Monty Don :)

We got the first few yellow vine tomatoes tonight, tasted fantastic.

It's taken ages for the Tomatoes to even appear on the plants (we have 5 plants and one tumbler) but they are all starting to produce at last

Had a couple of the cherry tomatoes & main crop ripening well with some almost ready.

Shed load of peppers & the pumpkin I bought by mistake as it was in the wrong section & I didn't bother looking is now bigger than my 2 hands & increasing daily

It has however taken over the bed & is like a Triffid!

Our sweet corn is really poor, like embarrassing

Grew potatoes, carrots, spring onions, runner beans and courgettes with decent success this year, rather than the rest which failed. So I know what to go with next year!

We’ve got a great crop of tomatoes on the way, peas in the pod, cucumbers look great, had a good batch of potatoes and planted the next crop. Raspberries, we’re onto our third pick ripening, rhubarb had been brilliant, broccoli, sprouts and beans all good and we have onions coming that don’t look bad.

Cauliflower has been a disaster and all but two heads have “bolted”, corn hasn’t been great but still has time to prove me wrong while our gooseberry plants were attacked early on but we seem to have been able to salvage the bushes and hopefully will get a good crop next year.

We harvested the last of the peas this evening. Going to take them down tomorrow/at the weekend.

Our corn is looking good. Just hoping they are ripening in the cobs on the plant.

The cucumbers are the ones surprising me. Definitely the best I've ever done with them, and you can see new growth in the fruits every day.

Strawberries - they've been and gone like 2 months ago maybe, the leaves/trails are still going wild now though, are they just setting themselves up for next year? Wish they'd produce twice!

If you peg the trails in the ground they will take root and form another plant

Something had attacked my sweetcorn as a lot of the stalks were broke (I blame LJ, he's always been a jealous little bitch)

Never had such a bumper year for courgettes and cucumbers, still waiting on the tomatoes to ripen, if there was money in growing brambles I would be the richest person here !

Can someone explain the difference between courgettes and cucumbers? They seem exactly the same to me, other than the skin being slightly wrinklier on courgettes.

Erm, they taste completely different :icon_lol:

Can't imagine raw courgette would be much fun.

Slice them into ribbons with a little salt and a drizzle of olive oil
