The "Grow Your Own" Thread

Never heard of balloon plants. Just googled them and they're lovely colours.

Is my dyslexia showing me up again ?

Looks like he's got elephantitis of the testicles.

i believe we have blue, pink and white. unsure if we have any other colours.
some we're still waiting to find out...
also love how different they look to other flowers, in that the petals really do look like balloons before they open.

sown more lettuce, spring onions, chives and radish watermelon.
lot of things have yet to germinate. trying to stop checking the greenhouse too often!
sunflowers looking good though, so probably need to pot them up this week. also looks like some cucumbers are sprouting too, so might pot them up at the weekend.
minor success with some sweet peas, however suspect one lot of seeds haven't germinated at all.
this time of year I'm terrible for thinking nothing is growing.

potted up what i hope will be red sunflowers this afternoon.
hoping for the chance to pot up the yellow ones tomorrow.
thinking about getting the sweet peas out, and hoping it is dry enough this weekend to sow the last lot of seeds I want to get in.
it tentatively looks like some of the stuff in the greenhouse is starting to show signs of life, maybe. also the pots with bulbs (dhalias) are showing the first signs of life too.

finally it isn't freezing!
got some trays of beans, spring onion, radish watermelon and chives out of the greenhouse.
sown new trays of beans, butter beans, and leeks (as most from the first lot of all 3 didn't sprout, or haven't yet!)
almost june, and a lot of stuff is only just germinating.

Potato's starting to come through & some movement of the carrots & onion plants

Not sure how they will fare as been a load of rain in the last month , though actually had sun & a bit of heat yesterday :).

Everything is sprouting lovely (although all still in the greenhouse)
A good friend had sent me some weird stuff (cucamelons ?) so it's exciting this year, I need to start thinking what to get him next season as I have to up the anti, I'm thinking Triffid :)

Pumpkin plants get close to that - planted one last year unwhitingly as thought I had bought a cucumber plant

Took over a whole 3 m * 1m veg bed

the nice weather has allowed me to potter outside.
sweet peas planted up a trellis. planted out the first lot of sprouts.
the black grass I split has all taken well.
there's fruit on the blackcurrant plant, and the strawberries are doing well too.
the blueberry bush is full of flowers. historically that's always been the one producing less fruit than the other plants.
Raspberries are growing well too.
finally mowed the lawn. Planted out the peas, and some sunflowers (got too many more sunflowers to plant out).
planted some sweet williams into hanging baskets, and also some marigolds. sowed more seeds of both.
also sowed more basil, as the first batch haven't germinated, but think the 2nd has. sowed the last of the sprout seeds I have too.
finally the tomatoes have started germinating. It's june and they're only just appearing!

day off, so into the garden.
planted out cucumbers, hoping they reach out to a trellis.
first lot of beans planted out on the canes. sunflowers planted out in the middle of the beans/canes.
potted up the cucamelons that have germinated, and also the first tray of tomatoes.
planted out the last 2 sweet peas.
planted out a few more sunflowers by a different fence.
mowed the lawn, and did a lot of watering today. emptied out 3 pots where the bulbs have disappeared into nothingness, and will have to work out what to plant in them.

Am I the only person who sees this thread title and sings it to the tune of Fleetwood Mac's "Go your own way"? Probably...

been making myself go outside to potter about, as noticed doing small tasks like watering was helping my personal wellbeing.
strimmed a load of grass that was getting excessively tall. It was initially quite nice watching the tall grass in the breeze, but it got unweildly.
Started potting on some tomatoes.
planted out the last of the beans, butter beans, and sunflowers.
Potted on some spring onions that were in plugs. They're now in a trough, with some extra spring onion seeds. The first spring onions are now looking really good.
got 3 or 4 leeks to plant out, but the 2nd lot sowed have seen more germinate.
2nd lot of sprouts will need planting out soon.
the basil seeds I sowed are finally growing ok, and will need potting on in a week or 2.
Mom gave me a carnation that I have split into 3, and some other cuttings, that I have no idea what they are.
The cucumbers are coming along fine. The peas have flowers. The first lot of sunflowers I put out are over 3 feet tall now. got some yellow, and some red ones.
also got some random poppy plants appeared, though this rain will have battered them.
and the first balloon flower is likely to flower soon.

The good thing about being out there, is it has definitely made me feel better. I have another list of jobs out there to crack on with too!

spent more time in the garden today that I thought I would looking at the forecast!

picked a load of blackcurrants. was given the plant about 4-5 years ago, and it is now established, and had a good crop with more still to come. was given a blueberry at the same time, and so far not had much fruit from it, however there is a lot of potential fruit on it this year, I am hopeful. the raspberry plants are growing, but no sign of fruit there yet.
went to buy compost this morning, and b&q had a clearance shelf, and I bought 3 trays of geraniums for a £. Potted them all up - 24 plants! got to pick somewhere to plant them out in a few weeks.
also was in aldi yesterday and bought a leucathemum for £2. potted it up, and plan to split it next year.
planted out the 2nd sprouts, and the first leeks (only a couple though). the first sprouts i put out are doing well.
noticed the peas have pods, and the beans have flowers.
random poppies flowering in the veg patch. they look good, so I weed around them. there's also a nice huge poppy somehow growing right in front of the house, through a crack in the drive!
the sunflowers are between 3 feet and 5 feet high. the first ones I put out now have really thick stems.
a fair few gladioli have sprouted. no signs of flowers yet. the lilies have flowered though. and given I split them last autumn, that surprises me a little.
the sweet peas are climbing, but again no flowers yet.
I potted up some basil for salads, and also noticed that the 3rd batch I sowed is looking really promising!
I potted up a lot of tomato plants, after waiting ages and being convinced, as usual that I'd have very few. One rogue plant even has flowers already!
the first spring onions look almost ready. the 2nd and third lots are germinating too, looking good. Various pots of chives are also on the go.
planted some hanging baskets and pots with sweet williams, and marigolds.
Have some cuttings my mom gave me that will need potting on in a week or 2. No idea what they are, but they have a strong scent!
the strawberry planter has 2 types of strawberries, and the one type is giving some lovely fruit at the mo, and the other type seems to be kicking in, which should mean a continuous supply! Am also trying to get the off shoots to take in new pots for extra plants.
the balloon plants from previous years are flowering. The ones I sowed last year and potted up in spring are thickening out, and should flower later this year. The seeds I sowed this year seem to have some, tiny plants that I hope to pot up next spring.
I repotted 2 thyme plants. the thyme from last year has lovely little white flowers on.
the wisteria is flowering for the first time ever. got to work out what to do with that long term.
the cucamelon has a net and is climbing up and away!
the first cucumber plant has a flower and I think a fruit on it.

So today i emptied picked the 3 pots I planted my potatoes in and got a decent haul…
F7BC684E-F79F-460F-B449-602FE9CE10E1.jpeg

we also picked some fruit, gooseberries and rhubarb
