The Goggle Box Thread

There’s a massive amount of fantasy/sci-fi made with shite acting. Not stopped a lot of them being classics - I love(d) B5 but the acting was utter tosh.
I could never get on with B5 but then I think Star Trek is ace and you're right the acting is ropey as fuck in parts.

It's the strength of the story line that gets then through.

WoT has neither.

The storyline in the books is absolutely fantastic. The problem is it is a slow burner before it really gets going so your are probably going to need three series before you even get to the meaty stuff. And TV doesnt have that patience commercially. The books are just too big to easily convert and you can't really split them out and swap chapter order like you can with GOT as the main characters stay pretty much together for a lot of the first two books at least.

They could've started anywhere and then told the story backwards and forwards. The days of linear storytelling are gone really. Even GoT did that.

Tarantino broke that in the main and Nolan has continued to play with arcs played out in different speeds. WoT seems a bit old hat in that regard.

The latter episodes are better but still didn't move the story or characters on enough in 8 hours of TV. Maybe they should've done more episodes but there needed to be something a bit different as it's all a bit dull.

I will try the books instead (this may be on audible).

The books are excellent but it took Robert Jordan 1000 pages to clear his throat

Book one of WoT is basically the first half of Fellowship of the Ring, but ~800 pages instead of ~250.
I'm enjoying reading it so far, been on the to read list for a while, just struggling to get time atm...

Books 2-5 are where really gets going. Bit of a lull in books 8-10, especially Crossroads at Twilight, and then it kicks up again with the books co-authored by Brandon Sanderson at the end after Jordan's death. The final book is tremendous.

The first part of The Responder was excellent. World class drama and a real dig at the state of the UK right now.

Trigger Point was guff, but highly enjoyable. Even the cast know it's completely daft but are enjoying it anyway.

Yeah The Responder was good, but like few of recent BBC shows it paints a pretty grim picture of the UK.....suppose I'm a bit insulated from it in my cosy world.

There's a lot of sense in this. TBH without recommendations from on here, I'd really struggle choosing anything to watch over the past 2 years. We recently finished breaking bad over a month ago, and haven't started with anything else yet as we can't choose.

Sometimes my wife and I will spend so much time trying to choose something to watch we'll eventually just give up and go to bed.

My wife has genuinely spent over 30 mins just scrolling through netflix, without ever selecting anything to watch.

I've no idea where my backlog would be at without months of lockdown...

I know its lots of different posters over a few platforms but sometimes I do wonder how you all manage to watch so much TV? I struggle to find time to keep up with terrestrial/catchup services and Prime. Do some of you never sleep?

Same - we've made a list on a notepad now of potential stuff we want to watch, from things suggested on here and elsewhere, when we've finished one thing, we pick from that rather than endless scrolling. It's really helped tbh

we too have a list. we managed to watch queens gambit, ratched, and BB. Star Trek Discovery was taken off before we got a chance to start!

I have thought similar to be honest. Several years ago I read a stat saying the average person spends 14 years of their life watching tv. In a way, that shocked me. Over the past 3-4 years I have discussed with mrs jelly how easy it can be to sit in front of nothing, or worse stuff you have already seem. I often ask her if she would choose to turn the tv on to watch what she is currently watching (the answer is usually no).

I tried to make more time for reading many years ago. Mrs jelly frequently naps during the day or evening, and I always turn the tv off when she goes sleeping. I think that's why people are shocked when I update the jolly good read thread!

You do realise on all streaming services there's a button to add stuff to your list don't you?
