The Football News Thread 2024/25

Sky Sports making him sound like Harvey Milk this morning. Makes sense if he made a deal with the Sun.

So what reality TV show will he end up appearing on first?

Sterling came across very obnoxious, as she tells him it’s in the sports news and it’s obviously got attention. Having the “I don’t care attitude” is a bit childish

He is right though isn’t he? Making a story out of something that isn’t a story just fuels the problem.

The problem is there massively Chelsea at home in April 2023 would say so. Probably would be accepted by fellow pro’s but it’s probably more the crowd. The it’s “banter” and “grow thicker skin” isn’t justified reason either.
Reality is he’s reporting on sports radio station and this is sports related so he has to at least report on it, not just shun it.
You’re there to provide for the listeners not your own little agenda.
I do think it’s being used as a convenient distraction by Coote to cover his idiotic behaviour which isn’t excusable regardless.

Exactly this. His subtext is "I did these bad things because I am gay".

Which is terrible on so many levels.

I don't think that is what he is saying (or attempting to say). It's a far more complex issue than that.

He is suggesting that owing to the risks of abuse within the game, he felt it safer to hide his real self. He effectively lived a double life, not being able to be true to who he is/was.

To do this is exceptionally challenging and duplicitous. You're essentially "on guard" all the time, being hyper vigilant to risks, and the fear of exposing yourself. It also means that self perception is skewed, in as much as who is the real you - the one you're hiding, or the one who is out in public but is fake.

Prior to the decriminalisation of homosexuality, lots of men lived this way. The suicide rate for those people was off the scale compared to the rest of society.

He is saying that living this double life, and having more than one persona affected his self perception, and thus his self esteem. As a result, he engaged in unhealthy behaviours and self medication.

He is absolutely not saying he did this stuff because he is gay.

There's two options. 1: He's saying what he thinks will give him the softer landing. 2. The Sun were going to "out" him and he's just had to run with a narrative on the fly

I disagree.

You're using a lot of words here:

"He is saying that living this double life, and having more than one persona affected his self perception, and thus his self esteem. As a result, he engaged in unhealthy behaviours and self medication."

For him blaming his behaviour on being gay.

He's saying if he wasn't gay he wouldn't have done the things he did. It is as simple as that.

In a world with less rampant homophobia, maybe. That’s not the world we live in, though.

I had a degree of sympathy for him at the time and I was more than uncomfortable with the media pile on when the stories surfaced. I also have sympathy for his fears due to his sexuality becoming known as we all know what he’d have been subjected to at grounds around the country.
None of it excuses what he’s done and he’s been an absolute fool to allow his career to be ruined with what he’s said and done.

It really isn't. If you think life is that simplistic and basic, then I am not sure what else to say. Why don't other gay men act the same way? Answer, because being gay isn't the reason for that behaviour.

He is, and you are also saying it.

Life isn't simplistic or basic, but he is absolutely blaming being gay as why he made the poor decisions he made.

This has got the potential for a really boring argument. You're both saying the same thing.

If David Coote wasn't gay, he wouldn't have made those choices. But being gay wasn't reason the reason he made those choices.

Nigel Owens the rugby referee came out in 2007, the rugby world wasn’t bothered in the slightest, he carried on refereeing big games like World Cup finals, maybe it’s football and its machismo thats the issue
