Very interesting point. And I guess I sort of agree. A complicated moral morass. Should Richard the Lionheart be considered a great King when the Crusades are taken into account? Or indeed Edward Longshanks after the attempted subjugation of the Scots?

Ha ha - there’s a list as long as your arm you could cite in our history - successful, yes, humane, certainly not.

I don’t recall anyone suggesting Baddiel was racist at the time. I’m pretty certain many people thought slavery was unacceptable long before it was abolished.

There's also the fact that Colston's statue wasn't put up in his lifetime- it was, in fact, put up nearly two hundred years after his death, long after the outlawing of slavery, and partially as a response to the raising of a statue to Edmund Burke, who was a strong critic of Bristol's role in the slave trade.

I can never condone slavery/racism/misogyny/homophobia/etc, but the social values of the time have to be a huge factor in these matters.

As someone mentioned earlier, there are things we do today that future generations will find 100% unacceptable. Maybe we cannot currently conceive of what those things will be, or maybe we just prefer not to think about them.

Most of us now agree that we are destroying the planet. Capitalism (and hence our financial wellbeing) works to deny the issues, minimise their impact, etc. We see that problem and know we should individually do more, so does our inaction make each of us evil?

Plus they named the concert venue the Colston Hall I think in the early twentieth century. Good gig venue when I went. Bad name.

Americans still idolise Columbus yet he was a terrible human being too.

To close the circle nicely, there will still be saints fans who idolise le tissier even though he's a moron.

It doesn't finish there. The name is littered across the city. Colston School, Colston Academy, Colston Street, Colston Road, Colston Yard, Colston Tower, Colston Fort, Colston Parade. A legacy largely from the Merchant Venturers who are still a driving force behind the scenes here and one of the primary landowners across the city.

He did invest a lot of money in the city, quite philanthropic really, just a pity it was a heinous crime where he acquired his wealth from.

Someone similar did something similar in Brussels. But who cares about 10m dead.

Yes but we're not talking centuries ago, a more chilling rarely discussed side note of the infamous 'Rivers of Blood speech' was the general population agreed with it, I think 75% of the country were in agreement, according to a poll at the time, after Ted Heath sacked him the dock workers went on strike and marched on Westminster, that was within my lifetime. (ps.I was only 2)

Leftist political parties tend to need the support of both the working classes and the liberal 'elite' - who sometimes have polar opposite desires - eg brexit and 'social values'. (Yes, I do know Ted Heath was a tory).

I have no doubt that in the future our endorsement of products by Apple, Nike etc. and the dubious foreign employment practices will be treated with such contempt.

Ah well, a silver lining… they’ll hate Newcastle fans more than we do right now

Three straight home wins for Charlotte FC! Beat Atlanta 1-0 today. Up to 9 points, good for 5th in the Eastern table (albeit having played a match more than basically everyone else).
FCK ATL

Excellent work by the Villa reject in goal for Atlanta as well btw.

Rowan Vine alleging a manager would guarantee him a start if he paid 6k. Rumours are Warnock...
