Germany football legend Franz Beckenbauer is under investigation by American attorney Michael Garcia along with Harold Mayne-Nicholls from Chile (Mr M-C is a potential candidate for the FIFA Presidency)
Jerome Champagne would like to stand against Blatter, but can't get the requisite five countries to back his bid. Our Chilean friend has that backing and, oh look, he is going to be drummed out of FIFA, and Blatter will be unopposed again. What a shock.
Trying to implicate Beckenbauer could be a massive mis-step though. Could see the German FA combining with ourselves as a more powerful unit to try and bring FIFA down in future.
Given Garcia has already resigned, I wonder what they'll choose to do?
Plus, they're not voting on releasing the full report. They're voting on another different summary to release (or not).
They are voting on a full release - but redacted to protect the 'innocent'.
Blatter can either let the full executive committee vote on this, or alternatively, only those members who cast votes when the original decision was made - ie those most likely to have been corrupt and to be implicated by the report can decide whether it should be public.
So the panel, after a "difficult" meeting (read that as Domenico Scala telling Blatter to release the report under their terms before Garcia leaks it) the report will be released. But not the full report, and it will be redacted. And it will be released after FIFA investigations into Beckenbauer and co are completed. Expect those investigations to conclude on the 12th of never.
What a coincidence, several of those arrested opposed Blatter's presidency and called for the Garcia report (corruption over Qatar and Russia World Cup bids) to be published.
This stinks worse than the Qatari bid. FIFA have finally sunk to new depths.
I didn't read the article that closely so didn't realise it was members who had opposed Blatter. I can only hope that one day his empire collapses around him but I'm sure it wont.
So FIFA claim they instigated the investigation in November 2014?
Okaaaaay....
If that is the case
1) Why do the FBI say they have been investigating since 2011?
2) Why were arrests made on the most damaging day possible for FIFA?
Blatter is hugely damaged by this as the heads of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL are among the arrested, and those two federations had promised their block votes for Blatter in the election.
Also interesting to hear that Swiss authorities have a separate investigation into the award of the 2018 and 2022 world cups.
