The F1 Thread

If it happens then it's no more than they deserve. They wanted Hamilton investigated further after Silverstone so they can't complain about Mercedes doing it.

Saying that if max had put that amount of lock on to make the corner at that speed and angle he would have found himself arse about face.
Well that’s because he was never going to make the corner and he knew it. He was either planning to wipe them both out, Hamilton alone or force him off track.
If max went in too hot too make the apex that's on max
Exactly
I can't wait for the new cars to bring see proper racing back so we don't get the inevitable slanging match every race over the single confrontation the current format allows. That's the biggest issue at the moment, pretty much every race is defined by a single attempt at an overtake because of how shit the cars are for actual racing. Everything has to be nursed and managed to such an extent that you just get a single all or nothing opportunity which is always going to bring out the worst in competitors.
Be interesting to see if it actually works. Not sure whether they have done any testing beyond wind tunnels?

Did you actually watch Sunday? It was a race for the ages!

I do agree with your overall sentiment though that they need to find more overtaking. I’m not expecting Villeneuve v Arnoux at Dijon every race but something approaching that would be great.

The issue is, the only reason it was good was because of Hamilton’s penalty. If Hamilton lines up on pole, even with a bad start he’s getting past anyone pretty quickly and wins by 30 seconds.

Sounds like scrambled grids might be a solution. Hope not though, as that is such a false and ridiculous concept.

Genuinely good overtaking has been a massive rarity for years.

You either have far quicker cars steaming through the field after penalties which looks good but should always be expected or you get DRS basically giving people a free pass as long as they can get half way close to the man in front before their car overheats or the tyres get ruined in the dirty air. It's so rare to see a genuine drawn out battle where it's properly up in the air who is going to come out on top.

The current cars are technologically phenomenal but they're not really race cars anymore, they're designed to go as fast as possible in isolation but then fall apart in a pack.

Be interesting to see what happens when the first overtake round the outside is attempted.

Fucking hell Horner is still whinging. Seems pretty clear he is going to protest the Merc wing at the time he deems most inconvenient for Lewis.

The bloke is a weapons-grade bellend.

I’m watching some re-runs from today’s FP1 at the moment. Lusail looks like a great circuit design with some fantastic corners and lots of serious high speed stuff. BUT. You can tell it was designed for bikes. It’s just too narrow. I worry about overtaking possibilities.

Looks a dull circuit to me. All fast corners and not many overtaking opportunities other than turn 1.

I think with a slightly wider track there could be lots of jostling places in the middle of the lap. As is there is literally one overtake to do and it will be about straight line speed and getting it done before turning. Santa Pod.

That's pretty much the sport for the last few years, DRS or stay put.

I agree on many circuits. This really looks like a candidate for that. Then you get the hugely overpowered DRS at Portimao. Middle ground needed.

Call me an old man shouting at a cloud, but I think they should bin off the flappy paddle bollocks. Three pedals and a proper manual stick...

I long for the day when DRS can be fucked off completely, farce that the sport had to come to such a thing to 'create' overtaking opportunities.
What people don't get is that it's just a way to re-enable the old slipstreaming that happened in the old days before about 1983, when the flat bottom rules means that suddenly you couldn't follow cars so well. Aero effects like this have always been part of F1 (and Grand Prix racing before that).

Hopefully the re-introduction of ground effect which isn't really affected by following other cars in next year's regs will resolve.

That Merc is obscene - unbelievable pace. Half a second on tap whenever it's wanted.

Shocker from Perez.
