The F1 Thread

Absolutely nothing he could have done. Truly horrible.

I was only 12-13 when Roland Ratzenberger died at Imola and it was obvious looking at him in the cockpit that he was gone. Thankfully it has mostly been eliminated from the sport but equally Jules Bianchi and Justin Wilson were awful incidents to witness live. Bianchi in particular. The boy never had a chance.

I can remember Senna obviously. I still cry every fucking time I watch the film. It is heartbreaking.

Before that, I can just about remember losing Gilles Villeneuve. I was only ten when he died at Zolder but it was again shocking. It was practice so you didn't see it live in those times.

Senna wasn't obvious at the time. It wasn't shown live and then on replay didn't look especially dangerous. It was only as time went on when you thought "fuck me, there's a problem here".

Ratzenberger was obviously dead straight away and Bianchi was never surviving that.

Ratzenberger you just knew the moment his head lolled over in the cockpit.

Bianchi I can remember that the comms were "is that a car there under the heavy lifting truck, oh my word it is"

Nah

Rubens Barrichello should never have survived the practice crash at Imola just before the Ratzenberger incident

Equally I will NEVER know how Kubica walked out of his Canada accident. That was a miracle.

For a fiery escape, Berger at Imola again - pretty sure that was Tamburello as well. Another miracle.

And then you go back to dear and sadly missed Niki. That should have been utterly unsurvivable.

Niki had 43 years after that. An awesome driver and an awesome man, don't feel sorry there. He did everything he wanted to do.

He did

But he shouldn't have. I am so glad he went on to have a great career and I got to see him race live at Silverstone. He broke down right in front of me at Stowe and was ace with autographs and all that.

Ferrari are quick in third practice at Canada. No doubt Mercedes will be quicker again in qualifying.

Vettel nicks pole with a stunner of a lap, we might finally get a non Merc win!

Five second penalty for Seb. Hehehehehehehe

Seriously harsh penalty and he is rightly massively fucked off.

I can only presume the Stewards decided that as he would have known that Lewis was only a few metres behind him when he went off he should have hit the brakes hard instead of trying to rejoin the track at full speed.

He had no control but that’s because he was still flooring it coming off the grass.

Its harsh but Hamilton has to slam the brakes on to avoid a high speed collision when he should have been able to sail past.

This appears to the rule that cost him -

article 27.3 of the sporting regulations: "Should a car leave the track the driver may re-join, however, this may only be done when it is safe to do so and without gaining any lasting advantage."

It looks harsh but he did have control IMO. The backend wasn't stepping out to justify keeping right. He knew what he was doing.

Think it's very harsh, car was still wriggling around a little as he rejoined the track so any big input on the wheel could've just spun him. I don't think he really put anyone in any danger, it should be a given that someone should be allowed to overtake because the guy in front made a mistake. Let him get back on and defend the position as long as he's not blatantly endangering anyone.

The whole swapping of the boards before the podium was very childish though, as was Hamilton's over the top celebration when he got out the car.

Unfortunately for Seb the stewards deal with incidents in a black or white way. They have a rule and he broke it.

Thought Seb swapping the signs was funny and Lewis OTT celebrating with his team is fair game. They had to work extra hard this weekend after his crash in P2 and then the discovery of a leak that meant they had to race against time to fix it for the race.

That penalty was unfair imo, he didn’t deliberately go onto the racing line he just ended up there really, disappointing as it ruined an exciting finish. Pleased to see Renault look better but really annoyed that Norris’ car broke as he would have been looking good for some points too.

Hamilton's celebration with his team was no different than any other win.
