Nah. I could see where they were coming from. They were going to lose Hamilton's 21s lead anyway because of the safety car. If they thought they could take a free pit stop and stay out in front on fresh super-soft tyres it was a good decision as he would have easily won the race from there instead of being under pressure from behind. 19s was about the time lost for a full pit stop round Monaco. They ballsed up the gap needed though because of the differing deltas required behind the virtual/standard safety cars.

or alternatively, a cynic might also suggest that the last thing F1 needs right now with falling audiences and therefore revenues is another stale season with the championship decided early, so please Toto, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you see to it to hamper that chap who is running away with it and build up some controversy. That would be just the ticket....

It was nothing more than an utter fuck up of epic proportions.

If you go back to how Lewis was last season during the nightmare spell between Monaco and Belgium, how he reacted to this was a massive difference. Whilst he was fuming, he didn't do the blame game, he didn't do the knowing looks when asked (like he did when asked do you think Nico did that on purpose at Monaco). His "we win together, we lose together" and "we will sit down and talk through what happened" at least shows he has grown somewhat. Compared with Nico's rant at Lewis for controlling the pace of the race he was a Saint.

Next test, at a track he likes and if the car is good he will win it if his head is back in order.

The silliest thing is that they wouldn't have been able to pass him even if his tyres were nearly finished. Yes they thought it was a free pit but was entirely unnecessary even if there was a gap. What if there had been an error changing the wheels? Wouldn't be a first.

I understand the thinking. Lewis gets out in front with new shoes on, and the race is 100% won. What they fucked up with was forgetting that new shoes make fuck all difference if you fail to get out in front. Had they never watched Mansell stuck behind Senna at Monaco? New shoes versus completely shot tyres and still Ayrton held him off with ease.

I didn't realise he'd caught the safety car before pitting, therefore losing loads of time to the pair behind him.
