Rosberg: “My thoughts are with my colleague. They have given us some information and it seems very, very serious".

Reports he may have impacted the counterweight at the rear of the truck, which I know of from experience of fork lifts are huge lumps of solid metal weighing literally a tonne.

Sounds and looks like he hit the truck sideways on his left and wiped out the front of his roll hoop and front left wheel. It all points to a serious head impact though which is very concerning. Eerily reminiscent of Maria De Vilotta's crash in testing when she also hit a truck at head height.

The Sky boys certainly looked a bit shaken as they brought the wreckage past them in the pit lane just, which they didn't show obviously.

Brundle looks distraught.

Actually the rear of the truck houses the engine. So not solid metal but still not good obviously.

Bianchi's dad has confirmed to French TV that Jules is undergoing surgery for a severe head trauma and is in a critical state.

It is very sad indeed. It must have been a very bad collision. I am hoping he pulls through, but it does not sound good.

Potential good news:

French sports newspaper L’Equipe are reporting that Jules Bianchi’s operation is complete and that the French driver is not on life support.

amazing if he survives that without any brain damage or other severe things

Doesn't sound too promising at the moment.

Andrea de Cesaris was killed today in Rome.

Well he's breathing on his own and the op was supposedly a success. I expect the prognosis isn't going to be good though.

It really hasn't been a good 12 months for motorsports has it?

He's back in surgery and on a respirator with internal bleeding.

Doesnt sound good no

Do you think heads will roll after this arrangement..shouldnt they have pulled out the safety car after Sutils crash because of conditions and a high speed turn and the fact they opened up the tyre cusions to get the tractor in?

Not really. It's the same procedure as always to try and recover the car. It was just unlucky that Bianchi had the exact same spin.

If anything the drivers need to be slower through double waved yellow zones when the marshalls are on track. They never slow down enough. They're supposed to be prepared to stop during those times.

Did he slow down at all..were they yelloy flags there? Strange he got off at that speed then..

No idea. No-one seems to have any footage of it.

There were definitely double waved yellows at that section.

They probably should have the safety car out in that situation though, especially with the rain coming down as it was. The whole incident was completely covered up after it happened, the commentators seemed unaware that when the medical car went out it was for Bianchi I don' even think they knew he went off.

The car wasn't in a dangerous position to be recovered from though. A safety car isn't necessary in that situation. Yes the rain was coming down but as I mentioned the drivers should be slowing right down through a double waved yellow zone, especially in those conditions.

There is footage but the FIA have blocked all footage.

Motor racing has never been safer, but sadly these incidents do still happen occasionally. The conditions for this race were very poor, but there was never any doubt that the race would take place. The drivers who operate at this level of motor sport are the very best in the world, and accept the risks involved. Though it does not make it any easier for anyone when something like this happens. Blame may or may not be apportioned to anyone, but it was just an accident that can occur.
