The F1 Thread

Lewis has been a lot quicker than Rosberg all weekend really (bar P2 when he had a few issues) and asking Lewis to sit back and wait is not going to happen is it.

Lewis's bad start down to steering wheel setting getting bawked, so he didn't have the "start setting" and took a few laps to sort out.

What was interesting was Lewis was told to hold back and go for the win at the end, but he ignored that and pushed it, which then brought the error.

Merc guys on Sky saying it was just advice on how to manage the car, rather than an order

Yep - course it was. They sort of have to say things like that. Thing is, no team is going to control racers like Lewis and Nico. They want to beat the shit out of each other on the race track. Which is ace for us.

Ricciardo is my driver of the season though. The Red Bull is a bag of nails and he is MILES ahead of Vettel in it.

Did Rosberg deliberately allow Hamilton through? Jackie Stewart thought it looked far too easy for Hamilton to get past him.

There was no overtake battle. He just went deep into a corner twice, gifting Hamilton the lead. Unless he deliberately was letting him past, which I do not believe he would. And why would he?

That's the rumour. That was his punishment for Spa.

Being denied by all and sundry at Mercedes. But Hamilton did get past very easily.

It's more that Rosberg would make the same mistake twice.

He was under pressure from Hamilton though.

Although I heard an even more crackpot one today that Mercedes deliberately put a three second delay on his brakes at that corner (twice) from the pit wall.

Pretty easy to go by when your team mate is playing dodge the cones though.

No way would Rosberg agree to "throw" a win. Any decent racer would tell the team to go fuck if they asked/told them to do that.

Coulthard did it for Hakkinen, albeit an agreement between themselves.

Not to mention Barrichello......

Slightly different set ups there. Certainly Barrichello who was only there to assist Schumacher rather than race for himself.

And Ronnie Peterson in 1978. But no-one would ever have accused Ronnie of not being a racer - he just signed a number 2 driver contract that year. Indeed, it's only relatively recently that such a thing has been considered wrong - from the start of motor racing until the 1980s it was considered perfectly normal.

I should have said a driver who wasn't classed as a Number 2 or so far behind their teammate in the Championship that they weren't challenging them.

With Rosberg being ahead, a bit of a bitter feeling between the 2 drivers, there is zero chance he would have agreed to let Lewis win and I seriously doubt any driver in the same situation as Nico would agree to do it, whether classed as a punishment or not.

Especially since Lewis quite rightly gave the two-fingers when asked to let him pass earlier in the season.

If Mercedes wanted to choreograph Monza lead swap the easiest way was a slow pit stop in-lap, not slalom down a puncture risky escape road.

Yes but a slow pit stop would have attracted attention, and possibly more so given how quick the pit stops usually are.

Would it? Hamilton's pit stops were consistently slower than Rosberg's for a portion of the season. Easy to accidentally fail to align a wheelnut and cost two or three seconds.

The clever way to do it would be to have a slower last sector of the in-lap because you don't go through a timing gun. Easy to go round parabolica a bit slowly.
