The Darts Thread

I'm firmly in the MvG camp rather than the "there's only one Phil Taylor" one.

Although middle aged bald men in green tops fist pumping and gurning to get on tv should be banned.

I love MVG. I think the way he plays is great, his mentality to winning is me, me, me and that's what winners should be. And he says it how he see's it. He mind fucks even the best as proven last night. He'll be a champion for the next 30 years.

I dont think he will win any more than 3 world championships, for me. He is just not ruthless enough in set play where it matters most.

Fantastic player to watch, exhibition stuff at times - but he will never go down as one of "greats"

Thornton carrying on where he left off in that collapse last week. This is atrocious!

BDO Boab.

Taylor winding down to a finish sadly. It happens to all the best eventually..

THE Professional Darts Corporation will break new ground once again in 2016 by staging its first tournament live on BBC Sport following an exciting new deal to introduce the Champions League of Darts to the circuit in September.

The eight-player tournament will be held on September 24-25 at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff to kick off a new era for the sport on terrestrial television.

Featuring the leading eight players from the PDC Order of Merit following July's BetVictor World Matchplay, the Champions League of Darts will see the stars split into two groups of four players.

Following the round-robin phase, the top two players from each group will then progress to the knockout semi-finals and final, with a huge £100,000 first prize on offer for the eventual champion.

"The BBC has a long history of broadcasting darts but this will be the start of an exciting new era," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

"The Champions League of Darts will bring the very best players in world darts - the top eight from the PDC Order of Merit - to BBC screens for an exciting, quick-fire tournament.

"In addition, it's fantastic for us to be taking the Champions League of Darts to Cardiff. Welsh fans love their darts and this will be another great opportunity for them to see the sport's biggest names live.

"Both live crowds and TV audiences have continued to soar for PDC tournaments in the last year, and it's a great reflection for us that the BBC were keen to add the Champions League of Darts to their sporting portfolio."

Barbara Slater, Director BBC Sport says: “We are very pleased to be showing the inaugural Champions League of Darts on the BBC for what is promised to be a thrilling and innovative tournament.

“Darts has always had wide appeal and it is great that audiences will get the chance to see all the action from the world’s top players live on BBC Two and across our platforms.“

More darts = win

Semi success and Sky will have that inside 2 years

Apparently this means no more BDO on the BBC. Which I'm not really fussed about.

Yup their deal expired I think after the World’s and its been earmarked (like the golf before it) as an unnecessary expense. They’d already cut their coverage to just the weekends the last couple of Worlds.

I presume the Beeb are getting this gratis or on the cheap in a Hearn scheme to raise the PDC profile further, as I can’t see them forking out any dough just for darts.

I also wonder if they’ll get Tony Green to commentate on it. It would be an interesting reversal to see him not knowing who the darters are rather than the people watching it.

There's been a major cock with an upcoming BDO tournament I was reading on Twitter at the weekend.

Great finishing early on in the Wade vs Smith game. 88, 120, 120, 87.

Shame about leg six but they can all have legs like that! Quite an enjoyable match so far. Looks like Smith is finding his feet.

Played alright for most of the match but gave up towards the end which is disappointing. Not over with three losses out of three but he needs to realise that if you let your head drop at this level it's all over.

Yep - his head dropped terribly in the last two legs. A shame, as he was playing some very decent stuff.

Really not sure how Wright won that one!
