Leach out of the Ashes with a back injury.

Huge problem. I don't think Rehan is ready, Bess has been dreadful for ages, Parkinson's career has gone way downhill very quickly.

You could go something like:

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Bairstow
Woakes/Scurran
Robinson
Wood/Tongue
Broad/Anderson

And trust Root to bowl 10 a day. But I'd be uneasy with it.

Think they'll go with 4 seamers and Root as the spin option

Jacks and Livingstone are perhaps options but I wouldn't necessarily endorse it.

Ah I didn’t know that about his bowling. Batting wise you’re only replacing Leach so no pressure from that pov

Nice little stat this. Stokes is the first test captain in history to win a game without batting, bowling or keeping

Murmurs are they've put the call out to Mo.

Been a big champion of his over the years. But with the bat:

2018: 19.14 (14 innings)
2019: 10.00 (9 innings)
2021: 18.85 (7 innings)

Yeah, good one.

And averages 64 with the ball against Australia.

No thanks.

I’d rather we picked Jacks if we go down that route but Mo could thrive under this new regime

Mo is really replacing Leach in terms of batting so even with shit figures that actually does improve things in the tail as leach is a proper ferret.

My concern is Mo bowling 30-40 overs and tying an end up so the quicks can be rotated. That was the value of Leach. Could turn his arm over for hours and hours on end without complaint.

Dawson is the most like-for-like replacement with the ball and is a much better batsman than the 2023 version of Mo. Wouldn't be a terribly exciting pick though.

Mo called time on his red ball career with England and Worcestershire some time ago. I've always liked him but the fact he is being considered and then in turn is 'thinking about it' [source: BBC] shows it's a mistake for me. He never has been good at holding an end up and is more of a patchy or golden arm bowler. I'd take his batting though because although he's erratic he 'can' score big runs quickly and from eight in the order they could be vital.
If we are going with an Ali type spin option I'd rather we pick Rehan Ahmed even though he's had little or no cricket. He's also a little expensive but I think will turn out to be a very good bat. Saw him at New Road recently though and he looks like he has the same dietician as Samit Patel. This may be a bit of an achilles heal!

Unfortunately I think Dawson is the best Leach like option although he's an uninspiring pick.

P.S. I also think Joe Root is very under bowled and could actually be the answer with Woakes at 8. I'd also have Foakes on my team so what do I know...

If it’s not the Ashes this wouldn’t have happened. I can see the logic but it’s a kick in the teeth for any spinners in the county game right now.

I wonder if I’ll end up hating Travis Head more than Smith and Marnus this summer?
