The Car Thread

Diesels for anything other than commercial vehicles should be banned for new cars. The health damage to children is very well proven
Emissions regulations for diesel and petrol vehicles are essentially the same, and have been since 2016.

But I think the mixed messaging of flip-flopping between clean air health benefits and saving the planet is starting to become undermining. A bit of both has benefits of course but in reality is neither one thing nor the other. Certainly not going to be enough to stop the kids jumping off bridges who are convinced we’re all going to be dead in 30 years anyway.

I dunno, it smacks of a bit of desperation creeping in with the EV outcomes looking like they might be nowhere where we were told they would be. I find it all a bit sad on all levels and don’t really see any winners here.

What outcomes?

Yes, and the abandonment of the Euro 7 roll-out was a massive mistake in my opinion. That would’ve facilitated a much more manageable and structured phase out of more polluting vehicles but as Harry explained, the manufactures nailed their colours to the EV mast and the rights on wrongs of that are playing out now.

Good question - I think fundamentally we are going to get nowhere near the level of EV ownership necessary to make any real difference whatsoever to reducing global warming. Certainly not to the levels the doomsday activists have been lecturing about.

I mean, not saying we should just jack it in because we’re all going to die anyway, but we’re either going to die or there’s been an exaggerated pack of lies. I just think it’s unravelling a bit and the holes are starting to appear.

The vehicle manufacturers are the villains here. They are the ones who campaigned against Euro 7 and are keeping EV prices higher than they need to be. It's a risky strategy though, as there is a strong likelihood the Chinese manufacturers will wipe them out, particularly for small vehicles.

Tesla will change that on the smaller EV's when they finally launch Model 2.

Manufacturers are already getting ready to react to when that hits the road.

The move to solid state batteries will help as well on pricing, charge time and range

On the wider question of global heating, vehicles are only part of the problem. There needs to a complete move away from oil for everything - power, chemical feedstocks, the lot. Governments are making a complete cock-up of it, Oil companies won't do anything unless they are forced to - why would they? Equally Just Stop Oil don't understand what a stable transition away from it would entail, and the amount of uninformed rot some EV lobbyists come out with is unbelievable.

I know you are part of the industry, as I was for a long time and still am in a small way, but the Euro OEMs are glacial in their approach to change. Musk might be an arse, but without him there would be no progress at all. He's also complicit in maintaining selling prices, despite economies of scale, though.

I am teeny tiny part of the industry...

Musk is a huge arse, I have mentioned before on here how his own employees talk about him but he is making things happen and the arrival of certainly BYD will help as well. Although their pricing is a bit dodgy

I think its the Seal that will be around £45k over here but in China sold for around £22k. I am sure someone with more knowledge than me can explain that unless its a simple BYD are under charging at home with a little pressure from their dear leader to ensure China is seen as being a market leader and becoming a "green" country

Think I read that BMW are abandoning Electric vehicle builds and certainly VW are abandoning the ID3. Being gone by 2030. The Golf is going to be newly developed.
Golf brand is 50 years old!!
Certainly VW is putting the brakes on EV production, the infrastructure in Europe is far too thin, no where near where it needs to be.

ID3 is just being replaced rather than binned
Also launching the ID7 and a new EV Transporter.
BMW have a whole host of EV's lined up and recently announced their Munich factory will only make EV's

ID3 is just being replaced rather than binned Quote "There's not enough room for two similar vehicles on this platform"

The big EV news is that I finally found the slow / medium chargers I’ve been after on match days for the Man U match. Looking forward to hooking up tomorrow - though I’ve got to be one of four available to make it.

Did your magazine tell you it will happen in 2028?
Probably see VW dropping the iD name and replacing them with classic names - Polo, Golf, Passat etc.

The id7 looks really good. Been prevaricating over ordering a company car as it’s not on the list yet. Might run out of time.

VW are shit at giving discounts on new models. Keeps them off a lot of company car lists in the early days.

The ID Buzz a year after release I was only able to give dealerships a 1% discount if someone wanted to buy 10+

They had some truly astonishing deals on the leased buzzs before Xmas. The Id5 seems to be cheap now too.

I’ll probably just get a Tesla but would be really good to have an alternative

Got a lot of meetings with VW coming up for company car and Sal Sac customers. Interested to see what they offer.

Only got my i4 because BMW did a mega discount.

Tesla are nobbers at offering discounts, suddenly pulling them and not honouring prices.

I4 is on our list but seems a bit small inside. EV6, EQC are there and a few others but nothing that exciting. Getting revised next week so will wait a while longer
