The Car Thread

Yeah I’ll need to buy a cable as I’ve only got the 3 pin one atm

Did you not get one with the car?

Nope, they wanted to charge me an extortionate amount to get one so we didn’t bother, I’ll pick one up elsewhere a bit cheaper. As I say we don’t need it most of the time but it’ll come in handy at times I’m sure

Odd that some manufacturers don't supply charging cables with their EV's and look for an easy extra few quid on top of the large prices they get for the cars

Can't complain about Audi mind, boot full of the frigging things

Agreed, a charge cable is such a basic requirement. I don't know how some of them get away with not providing one.

I mean the MG4 was so much cheaper than most other EVs that it wasn’t too annoying tbf!

Just catching up on this thread.
I'm going to Northumberland in November. As we arrive in Cairnryan I've downloaded the Scottish charging app 'ChargePlace which seems to be excellent. It shows all the charging points in Scotland including several FREE ones! One is actually enroute in Dumfries rail Station carpark and it'll tell you if it's available or being used.
Can you guys suggest a good supplier in England and I'll check them out and join up?

Second point, I saw yesterday that the CEO of Moto Hospitality who operate service stations across the UK said there's a 'major problem' with supply.
He said there are 4 service stations with ample charging points but there is no power going to them! Power supply seems to be the problem, not installing charging points.
Is this a real problem?

Get an RFID card via the ChargePlace Scotland app. Mobile signal can be patchy so it’s a better way of starting the charge.

Just received my first Demo van from VW. They are kindly chucking a van at me each week this month.

Standard Transporter currently sat outside my house. Nothing exciting about that one but next week it will be replaced with a Multi Van, which I am looking forward to having and then the ID Buzz Cargo the week after. Was meant to Passenger Buzz the other week but the demo was required by a customer. The bastard.

Guy who dropped the van off is now off to wait for a bus to Shrewsbury so he can get back down South....poor bloke will still be waiting by the time they collect the Transporter from me

Looking at replacing my car in January and considering going electric, not totally convinced yet. Main worry is range, can't be bothered with service stations on runs 4 or 5 times a year, anything else to consider, any recommendations? Currently looking at MG4

How far do you drive? Public charging is pretty easy tbf

Only about 200-250 miles a week, but 4 or 5 times a year have a break to Devon, Cornwall and looking at Scotland next summer.

What’s the range on the MG?

Did a trip to Devon recently in one hit with 3 passengers, a dog and a roof box. 200 miles I think it was. But I only did 60-65 on the motorway as any faster than that and I wouldn’t have made it.

Without the roof box would be over 250miles based on shorter runs.

If you’re going further to Cornwall/Scotland are you realistically going to do that in one go? Because if you park up and rapid charge then by the time you’ve gone in and out for a piss it will have done most of it anyway.

Depends on the model but advertised upto 320 miles, I assume that's in perfect conditions with no load and a steady 50?

I’ve got the standard range MG4 and you get about 200 miles on that - you do have to drive sensibly on the motorways. I did 130 miles up to Northampton recently and used about 65% so the range is fairly reliable.

Check the reviews they normally give you a more realistic figure. Quick look says around 3.5m/kW so depends on what battery you get.

Thanks all for responses and has allayed some of the things I was put off by, any problems with MG4?

Install this app and set it up with the car you’re thinking of - plan your trip from home assuming 100% charge at the start and you’ll get a feel for how easy it is. The app is pretty conservative though so you might squeeze a few more miles out.

Was on that earlier. Using the Q4 to drive to MK tomorrow and back home Saturday.
Says I should need an 8 min charge at Watford gap on the return journey.
Hopefully can get on the hotel charger so no need to stop at all on the way back.

Nothing as yet, only had it about 3 weeks or so though! Really nice to drive - my first EV and first ever brand new car so not much to compare it to tbf
