The best cover versions thread

The Hunt - Sepultura
Hallowed Be Thy Name - Machine Head. This is just so good, it blows Maiden's original into tiny, tiny bits that you can't even see anymore, never mind hear. About as good as metal gets if you ask me.

Just listened to it/watched it - and no, it doesn't. Some slightly more growly vocals and a bit more thrashy guitar, but ultimately not that much different. Still a top version of a top song though.

a few more

jigsaw puzzle - flesh for lulu (cover of stones. vg version)
some velvet morning (lee hazlewood/nancy sinatra) is a great song and the version by Rowland s howard (birthday party) and Lydia lunch has a certain out of tune brilliance, though I doubt everyone would agree.
I keep coming back - afghan whigs. originally performed by tyrone davis, but dulli hitting all the notes not necessarily in the right order adds an extra and painful vulnerability.

Nine Inch Nails version of (you're so) physical off the broken EP is immense.

St Etienne - Only love can break your heart
Oasis - Cum on feel the noize

ziggy stardust - bauhaus
the day before you came - blancmange
i fought the law - the clash
do it - rollins band

The Doors - Alabama Song
Moby - Run On
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground
Show of Hands - Dakota
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Superstition
Urge Overkill - Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon
Ugly Kid Joe - Cats In The Cradle
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Something In The Air
Civil Wars - Billie Jean
Richard Thompson - Oops! I Did It Again
Katie Melua - Wonderful Life
Patti Smith - Smells Like Teen Spirit
John Mayer - Free Fallin'
The Beatles - Money

John Lewis have been responsible for a couple of good'uns - Fyfe Dangerfield's cover of Only A Woman is beautiful. As is Tom Odell's cover of Real Love, which the remaining Beatles did a horrible job of remastering.

How about this for a bit of a wildcard:

Another rough and ready cover: Hi-Standard - California Dreaming

Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright - Careless Whisper (that harmony in the middle 8, amazing!!)

Oh, and how could I forget Gomez's cover of Getting Better
