The 2014/15 Promotion Push Run-In Thread

Dropping either of the front two would be a major mistake IMO.

I know what you mean, imo its a tricky conundrum for Jackett, obviously we want to play Afobe and Dicko, probably the best strike force in the division currently, but my concern is when playing a 2 man central midfield against decent opposition we will a) struggle to get enough ball to feed them and b) pretty much concede the midfield, which means we will be defending deep for long periods and hoping to hit on the break, which is fine apart from our last couple of defensive displays. I am happy with going that way but also if the manager decides to be a bit more conservative then I fully accept his reasoning

Derby at home and Forest away recently suggests it is worth having the firepower. It's a difficult one I agree but I think we should continue with both of them up front. Sounded like our midfield had an off day which hasn't been the case before that lately. I do see Jackett being cautious and bringing Dangerous Dave in.

We aren't built for 4-4-2, we've gone with it out of necessity more than anything. It isn't the best fit for a single one of our central midfielders, McDonald included. For a start if you are playing that way you need goals from that area and our current starting pair have one between them all season, and that hit him and went in. Edwards scores a few but has never been able to play in a two and he isn't about to change now at 29. Also McDonald is not the best defensively and isn't that mobile, it leaves his partner with too much to do against decent opponents. If we stick with this set up next year we need at least two, maybe three new options there.

Pretty much agree with all this, bringing Edwards in for one of the front two isn't about goal scoring imo, its more defensive, protecting the weaknesses in central midfield.

My problem with playing 4-2-3-1 is we don't have a good enough option in the ten role, as hard as Edwards works defensively. 4-4-2 is our best option at the moment

If we want to continue with Afobe/Dicko up front long term we will need another quality forward, at least one quality centre midfielder (to give McDonald some breathing space if anything) and I would say a centre back too as I feel like without a lot of protection Batth struggles, as much as I like him

I wouldn't change it personally. We need both strikers on the pitch and just to roll with the consequences. Besides which Edwards has too many games when he starts where all he does is chase the opposition's defensive midfielder around, we can't afford to be wasting a shirt like that at this stage. Next year we need to work out what we want to do.

If we play Dicko and Afobe then it needs to be as a proper 2 up top. What we shouldn't do is make Afobe drop deep like yesterday. If we are going to do that then start with Edwards or Jacobs

I actually prefer it when Dicko is the one who drops into receive the ball. He protects the ball better, whereas Afobe makes better runs behind the defence.

Yep, I think Dicko is more of a natural dribbler in possession (which isn't to say Afobe is not, mind), probably owed to his days at Wigan when he trained as a winger IIRC.

Never a more true post on this site !!!

Looking like some decent home gates for the remaining 2 matches - just booked my ticket for Milwall & couldn't get the usual one I sit/stand in & very few left in SL2 for either that game or the Ipswich one

Totally disagree. Afobe is very good at dribbling, Dicko is very average at it and something he could do with working on to take him to a level higher than a decent Championship striker

Afobe looks very useful when running with the ball imo, Dicko can be a bt clumsy with it but is brilliant at holding the ball up

I think that sadly, we're now going to fall short of sixth :(

Sadly, I think we've blown it from the last 2 games - finishing 8th now. How I would love to be proved wrong, but can't see it.

We've not blown it yet at all. I think the Blues result was a stinker but most people thought Boro away is where we were most likely to drop points - obviously Saturday is a very important game that we simply must take 3 points from. If we don't, it'll look bleak.

I think some people are being far too negative about it TBH. 3 games to go, plenty still left to play for.

Bang On Langers!
Here's hoping your daughter is the lucky omen! :)
